There is so much wrong with this book, and not just because it features a victim of child sex trafficking as the protagonist. The story of JT LeRoy is more interesting than Sarah. LeRoy doesn't exist. The person writing these books was a white woman in her forties. However, she claimed to be someone like the character in this book: a male or intersex child prostitute raised by a drug addicted mother. The media EXPLODED over this. Garbage wrote a song about these characters ("Cherry Lips" on Beautiful Garbage); Asia Argento adapted Sarah into an unsuccessful film, and Gus Van Sant designed the cover! When it came time to make a media appearance, she hired her sister-in-law, who was kind of masculine, to portray the "character" of JT LeRoy.
Thing is, this book is basically Hogg by Samuel Delaney. He's a gay man who wrote a similar book three months before the Stonewall Riots. It's full of anger and rage, and it's more depraved and weird than anything LeRoy could conjure up. The parallels are clear: both feature underage protagonists who are largely nameless and passive, used for sexual purposes, usually at the hands of truck drivers. And Hogg is better in every way. It punches you in the face, where Sarah pulls back at the last second.
Is the story fun to read? Sure, in a sick kind of way. But the fact that it was done before, and better, and by someone who lives in the LGBT community, makes it hard for me to stomach. As it is, this feels like LGBT fanfiction.

I have seen very good movies on Netflix and I have seen very bad movies on Netflix. This one lands somewhere in between. The overall plotline of the movie was good to me. A girl from one sorority is charged with helping another flailing sorority by teaching them how to "step" as they call it, and clear up their name. If the girl succeeds in helping them she gets a recommendation to Harvard Law. However, along the way she faces many difficulties, obstacles, and choices that help her come to realize that maybe she isn't living the life she wants afterall. This movie uses college situations and sorority ideals to delve into societal and racial issues that we see in the world today. At some points the arguments got kind of hazy and confusing, but overall the message remained clear. Putting aside racial boundaries and focusing on strengthening each other can form a bond between the most unlikely people. Sure this theme is a little played out, but nonetheless I enjoyed the movie. The music was a great addition and the cast performed very well. The overall comedic factor was great as well. Not the best of movies, but definitely worth the watch if you are interested. *If racial issues and arguments offend you i would be cautious while watching this movie. While it is not a serious movie at all, i do feel that stereotypes were made and used throughout that might trigger some people. While i do not support such stereotypes, I do feel like this movie was still an alright movie that some people may enjoy watching.

I’ve vacillated between 5 and 6/10, and decided on 6.
I liked this novel about a serial killer who murders female lawyers and butchers them in a most unusual way. It kept me guessing at the identity of the killer until the end, and threw some red herrings in along the way.
What I wasn’t so keen on, was the way in which DCI Jake Carver was portrayed: not very quick on the uptake, relying heavily on the brains of Madeline Kramer who went to the Bloomsbury Academy of Law with the victims. I have no problems with Maddy being involved with solving the crimes, but at the expense of Carvers ability - not so keen.
I do feel that the story was rushed, but this may have been an effect of the serialisation on The Pigeonhole (the book was split into 10 parts over 10 days). If I’d had the actual book, I would have read it in 2 or 3 sittings.
What I didn’t like at all was the general bitchiness of the female characters towards one another. Frankly, the murdered women deserved their grisly ends. Are women who work in high profile jobs in the City really like this? If they are, I’m glad I don’t work there!
In conclusion, this is a fun, quick read, a bit irreverent in places (women in their 60’s are referred to as elderly - err, I have friends in their late 50s, and they’re anything BUT elderly!), but good for a debut novel. I wish the author good luck with her next book, and many thanks to The Pigeonhole for choosing another great book.

418. Blood Father. I had the feeling the whole time that this easily could have been the script for the last Rambo flick, Sly said no, Mel just got off house arrest so, it worked out. In this, I think Mel is playing a version of himself, and just went with it. Link is an ex-con recovering alcoholic that gets a call from his missing daughter, like legit missing, reward money type missing, anyways, she just called to let her know that she just killed her Mexican mobster boyfriend, and she's on the run and needs help. So Link goes and picks up Lydia and brings her back to his home/tattoo parlor. But wouldn't you know it, those mobsters find out where she went, and show up in a pretty amusing gunfight, each time Link pulls the trigger he announces out loud the criminal charge he is now going to face. Escape they do, on the run they must go. Once at a motel, obviously terrified that a criminal organization wants her and her father dead, she still has time to be a teenage girl and come flirt with the checkout guy, and that's when she sees the TV, the law is now looking for them as well. So go deeper into hiding they must, she dyes her hair blonde, Link shaves his pretty awesome beard to look like Mel's very real mugshot, and off they go again. Will the mobsters catch up? Of course they will or there'd be no point! It's definitely not great, but still fun to watch. Filmbufftim on FB!
