Merissa (13931 KP) rated The Lies That Bind (Dark Lies #1) in Books

THE LIES THAT BIND is the first book in the Dark Lies series, set in a paranormal world where Omegas are rare. Mason is an Omega and has been treated as a servant by most of his pack growing up. That all changes when Kip and his family move to town, and the two boys become best friends. When Mason is promised to Jerome, they think up a plan that will save Mason from having to mate him. Then the story really gets going.
This is a fast-paced story, full of attempted murder, best friends to lovers to I love you's. All the way through, you know Kip has a secret, but it's unclear what it is. I liked how Kip and Mason actually had to work at their relationship. Yes, it was incredibly fast, but it wasn't all smooth sailing. They had to figure out what worked best for them, amid all the amazing 'advice' given by different people.
As the first in a series, I was expecting some arc to come into play, but I was not expecting what I got! It will be interesting to see where it goes from here.
I received an early edition of this story, and as such, it does need another edit. Chapters 5 and 6 (I think) were the same ones repeated, and it made me chuckle when "ears ran down his cheeks." Still, a good story that I look forward to seeing develop in future books.

Good people die
What other readers have said about this fantasy book when it comes to how great it is is true. A Game of Thrones is an epic tale of good versus evil, men choosing between honor or peace, and women between family or duty. This story sets on different paths, feeding pieces of the plot to you, and slowly comes together in expected and unexpected ways. From each one information is learned on what is coming and what is occurring. You learn of life, death, betrayal, and war. Clues are riddled out at possible outcomes. Truths and lies are spoken.
Why are men missing from the Wall? Was Jon Arryn truly murdered? What is happening in the North? Will the last of House Targaryen come for their birthright? Who will live? Who will die?

ClareR (6129 KP) rated Social Creature in Books

A story of our times?
I really don't much like it when books are compared to other books. To be honest, I haven't read The Talented Mr Ripley (which is what Social Creature has been compared to), and I'm not much inclined to after reading this. I 'liked' Social Creature, but I didn't love it. None of the characters are remotely likeable. They're all shallow, duplicitous and out for what they can get. It's a story of today. Louise pretends she is someone she is not, so that she can be like Lavinia: rich, frivolous, thin and beautiful. Louise can't quite keep up though. She doesn't have the money, and she needs to work. Louise's life spirals in to more lies and worse is to come. It's a fascinating yet truly horrible story. I did really like the ending though!
