Kristy H (1252 KP) rated The Cousins in Books
Mar 4, 2021
Easy-to-read twisty teen thriller
Cousins Milly, Aubrey and Jonah Story barely know each other, and they don't know their grandmother, Mildred, at all. Wealthy Mildred disinherited their parents before the cousins were even born. But now Mildred has requested the cousins' presence at her seaside resort. All the parents want their children to go, hopeful that being inherited again is back on the table. But when the three arrive on the island, it's pretty apparent that Mildred isn't keen on meeting her grandchildren. It's also clear that there are a lot of secrets and lies swirling around the Story family and history.
This is a quick read and an easy thriller, if that makes sense. It's a fun story with some good twists and several crazy surprises. There's not a lot of character development or in-depth plotting, but the tale kept me guessing and engaged. I'm always a sucker for inheritance stories and giant houses filled with secrets perched on islands.
Overall, this is fast read and a twisty thriller. It would be a great starter mystery for teens. 3.75 stars.

David McK (3569 KP) rated Star Trek Beyond (2016) in Movies
Mar 6, 2021
Space ... the Final frontier ...
The latest (at the time of reviewing) Star Trek film - from 5 years ago, so 2016 - this is the third film to be set in the so-called Kelvin Universe (after 'Star Trek' and 'Star Trek: Into Darkness'), still starring Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldana, Simon Pegg, John Cho and (the late) Anton Yelchin as Kirk, Spock, 'Bones' McCoy, Lt Uhura, Scotty, Sulu and Chekov respectively.
This time around, Idris Elba plays the baddie role as a character who later proves to have a surprising link with The Federation, with the film also apparently including 50 new alien species as it was released in the year of the 50th anniversary of the TV series.
And therein lies part of the problem: that was hardly broadcast at all - indeed, I feel that they missed a major trick in not broadcasting that fact at all!
While the loose outline of the plot deals with ageing, and with a farewell given to Ambassador Spock, this is perfectly serviceable but not as good as the original film in the Kelvin trilogy (IMO).

Memphis
By Kelly A Walker
I never understood why my momma would keep such a big secret from me. I begged for an answer, but she refused to give in. Now that momma is gone, her secret has been revealed.
The secret now has a name.
My name is Memphis Reynolds, and I find myself driving hours south in search of him. My biological father. The man momma kept hidden away from me for reasons I never knew.
Surrounded by half-truths, lies, and heartbreak, I find something I wasn’t searching for.
Love.
Three very different, very exceptional, very handsome men, will teach me that it is okay to let go the dreams of a little girl, and grab hold the desires of a grown woman.
They have no idea what they’re getting themselves into.
Bless their hearts.
I loved it!! Took me an hour to read! You can’t help read it from the beginning in a southern accent! It was well written and I really got drawn in! She’s a new author to me and can’t wait to see what else she’s got.

Hazel (2934 KP) rated The Bonds of Blood (DI Dani Stephens #4) in Books
May 30, 2021
This is the fourth instalment in the DI Dani Stephens Series however, the first that I have read. For me, I don't feel I have missed out too much not having read the previous three in the series, maybe on a bit of the backstory, but nothing that ended up being detrimental to my enjoyment of The Bonds of Blood and just makes me want to go back and read more.
This is a great story - it starts pretty brutally with the murder of a husband and wife in their bed so be prepared - and one that follows DI Stephens and her team's investigation into the brutal murder which is far from straight forward.
Full of lies, deceit and secrets, this is a tricky one to try and work out who did it which makes it all the more enjoyable. It's full of great characters and is written at a good pace and I would definitely recommend to those who love a police procedural where it's not obvious who the perpetrator is until close to the end.
Thank you to Canelo and NetGalley for my copy in return for an honest, unbiased and unedited review.

Passions Promise (Golden Moments)
By Danielle Steel

Smart, beautiful, and very rich, Kezia Saint Martin leads two lives: one as a glamorous socialite jetting between the poshest places in Europe and America; the other, under a false name, as a dicated journalist committed to justice and her profession.
But the two worlds are pulling her apart, leaving her conflicted about her identity and the lies she tells to every man she meets. Then she meets Lucas Johns, a bold, dynamic crusader for social change - and an ex-con. Their attraction is immediate, but their love may be just one step from tragedy at any time.
Honestly I got bored! There were just bits of this book that didn’t need so many words! I think she was trying to push the social divide too hard yes we get how rich and famous she is and how he’s so not! Plus we saw the budding romance coming at the end!
Still with an auth so huge you expect a few bumps in the road!

LoganCrews (2861 KP) rated Notes on a Scandal (2006) in Movies
Sep 20, 2020 (Updated Nov 29, 2020)
Jesus - and I cannot stress this enough - CHRIST. 92 minutes of perfectly-paced, rhythmic showcases for some of the hardest-to-watch scenes in cinematic history which don't spill a single drop of blood. The last time I winced this violently at scenes that don't feature any gore was, fuck, 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘰𝘰𝘥𝘴𝘮𝘢𝘯? Just explosive, thought I was going to pass out or have a heart attack before this (classily) fucked-up and abusive portrait of the different forms emotional manipulation can take was over. Dench, Blanchett, Nighy, and Simpson are stellar and the paranoid cinematography is genius; people are always walking over and into the frame, choking each shot with paranoia - you're always trying to look past something or someone just to get a glimpse of this dark, remorseless world. I'll also cop to just loving character studies about psychopaths, let alone ones with such savage views on class and the lies people are willing to tell themselves so that they can keep their moral privilege - so they aren't like their own definitions of 'the filth', even if they're demonstrably worse. Effortlessly one of the elite stalker/obsession movies.
