"The Night of the Hunter is a perfect example of the strength of cinema, in which an image can say a thousand words, whereas in literature a word cannot show a thousand images."

I can seriously recommend The Return by Hisham Matar and Another Day in the Death of America by Gary Younge. A great mixed bag of non-fiction literature in this year's Orwell Prize longlist.

The Orwell Prize is Britain’s most prestigious prize for political writing. Here is the 2017 longlist:

"This is the story of a woman who has been discarded and who will not go down gently. If ever there was an unsung heroine of feminist literature, it is the amazing Jean Rhys."

We’re living in a golden age of young-adult literature, when books ostensibly written for teens are equally adored by readers of every generation.

So here are a few books (continually updated) from The Guardian's selection.

Protesting chickens, a mischievous bear, hunt the ballerinas and a Swedish horror story, here are The Guardian's best pick of children's books.

Superb
A magnificent and sometimes shocking novel. Powerful and it grabs you from the first page and doesn’t let go. Funny, tragic, gut wrenching, and one of the classic works of modern literature.

I read this for one of my classes in Medieval Literature. There were a lot of very interesting stories and poems in here. If you want a whole range of different Medieval classics, I definitely recommend checking this out!

"A great work of literature and an extraordinary cautionary tale, this story has much to teach us about psychology, politics and history. More than ever, it can allow us to look at ourselves and our rulers with open eyes."

"Ritwik Ghatak was India’s Sam Peckinpah: drunk, bellicose, brilliant. He brought a Bengali sense of literature and sadness to his work. You’ll maybe only understand half this film at first (certainly the case for me), but its richness overwhelms."
