Joan Didion recommended The Executioner's Song in Books (curated)

Norman Mailer | 1989 | Biography, Crime

Book Favorite

"I think no one but Mailer could have dared this book. The authentic Western voice, the voice heard in “The Executioner’s Song,” is one heard often in life but only rarely in literature, the reason being that to truly know the West is to lack all will to write it down. The very subject of “The Executioner’s Song” is that vast emptiness at the center of the Western experience, a nihilism antithetical not only to literature but to most other forms of human endeavor, a dread so close to zero that human voices fadeout, trail off, like skywriting."

"The greatest work of modern English literature. It’s known for being complex and difficult, but in a way it’s very democratic: a story about what it is to be human as one middle-class guy goes about one day of his life in Dublin."

"It is rare to find literature that is as entertaining and sexy as it is smart and profound. Robinne’s book appears to be one thing on the surface but provides the reader a much deeper, complex, insightful journey that she will not soon forget."

"This book never fails to intrigue me and touch me to my core. The characters, the philosophies, theories and life lessons are abundant and stunningly simple, too. And the best gift literature could have given us actors is the concept of doing it “for the fat lady.”"

"The Grandmama of southern gothic literature, O'Connor unabashedly tackles faith and faithlessness head on. Grotesque, funny and oftentimes creepy, these stories draw a picture of a society on the brink of moral bankruptcy. I find them more relevant today than ever....even on a desert island."

I studied this book for my English Literature A Level and the more I learnt about it, the more I realised how intelligent and creative McEwan has been. I know some people that found parts of this novel a little slow but personally I relished the detail character development.
