Has some all-timer bits, the entire segment with Eddie doing the drunk father routine had me doubled over in laughter - but otherwise disappointed to report that this is a mostly middling routine. Murphy's presence as a performer of course can never be understated, the dude is a force of nature even here at 22 and on SNL as young as 19. But this was *definitely* around the time where mainstream profanity (on this level, at least) in stand-up was still in its infancy and starting to become this enticingly risque thing because for the most part this uses vulgarity as a crutch in place of where a lot of these jokes need some room to breathe. I'm no stickler but the "lol I said dick!' act is only funny so many times, I adore caustic humor but when it's in service of such weaksauce, simple jokes it has all the nuance of a neckbeard Reddit post. Feels a lot like Chappelle's ššµšŖš¤š¬š“ & ššµš°šÆš¦š“ in that it just seems like a surface-level attempt at provocation at times. Plus the transitions are super awkward. The first half is kind of boring though overall I did laugh quite a lot, but I left feeling almost nothing. Definitely not as iconic as the leather suit.

This is my first 2 star rating for a Paige Toon book. I'm a big fan but I struggled to get into this one, it was only about the 75% mark that it started to really grab my attention and then it was full steam ahead.
Joe was great--I've noticed that she likes to write books about first loves and meeting them again years later. This must be the 3rd/4th I've read with that sort of storyline--and I liked the beginning where they spent a lot of time together. It was a little dark in places--Joe's brother--but also sweet at times.
I have to say that I think this book dragged a lot in the middle. There was a lot of bits that were irrelevant as far as I'm concerned, and that was probably why it's taken me so long to read.
Then we meet Lukas. He seems pretty normal to start with but the more of him we see the more controlling and demanding he became and I just wanted to scream at Alice. What was she doing?!
The ending was a little vague of names but it had to be Joe that she met. It had to be!

I can absolutely see why James by Percival Everett was shortlisted for the Booker Prize. I havenāt read Huckleberry Finn. I know itās a classic, but I still donāt feel a pressing need to read it - especially after reading this!
This is Jamesā story - the slave in Huckleberry Finn. When he finds out that heās going to be sold to another owner and separated from his wife and daughter, James decides to hide out on a nearby island until he can work out what to do. But things go wrong, he ends up heading towards the free states with Huck Finn, gets separated - and letās face it, a lot happens.
This made me laugh, worry a lot for Jamesā safety - I was well and truly captivated by the story. Iām pretty sure this will have filled in a lot of Jamesā story thatās left out in the original. White society is menacing and dangerous for James, and heās constantly looking over his shoulder. Theyāre not bothered that heās an intelligent, educated man.
I absolutely loved this, and Iāll be happy if it wins the Booker Prize (I could say that about most of the long list, never mind the shortlist!).
James deserves its success.

Still one of the best
Mario Kart is one of the classics. Despite now on its 8th iteration, itās still as good as it ever was and is one of the best games out there to play. No matter which version of Mario Kart Iāve played, I never really have a bad word to say about it, and 8 is no different.
The graphics are fantastic, and a great step up to those I was previously used to on the last version available on the Wii. The gameplay is as youād expect from Mario Kart and this isnāt a bad thing. Why fix what isnāt broken? I also love the fact that you can now play this online properly against anyone in the world - itās such a great feature and brings a whole new level of fun to the game. It can get a little dull and predictable if youāre playing locally as a couch co-op (or at least thatās what my other half says as I always win ?), but being able to play online multiplayer is so entertaining and we can play it for hours. Yes it is very frustrating, as sadly real players are a lot more ruthless than the computer players youāre up against locally, but itās still a lot more fun.
My only criticisms about this game are that whilst it has quite a lot of levels/courses, for me it still isnāt enough. Theyāre not exactly long races and you can get through them all fairly quickly, and thereās only so many times you can do the same courses. And the only other criticism relates specifically to online play. Online play gives you points, but some players have a lot more points than others (i.e. 5k+, 10k+) which indicates theyāve been playing for a lot longer. The online match ups take no account of points and you can potentially end up playing against players with a huge difference in skill and points level. Itād be nice if they could try and match players together within a certain points, as it might make it more of a fairer race and a little more challenging if players are all similarly matched.

Oh man, here's another one where I wonder what I missed. I just don't see what a lot of other people see in this one.
Fairly early on I thought to myself that there seems to be a lot going on but nothing happening. My opinion didn't waver much from there.
The music was wonderful but even so it felt like it was oddly misplaced in here. I found myself actively nothing it because it didn't feel right for the setting.
When we come to the acting I found it a bit hit and miss. The only performance that really blew me away was Regina King, she's a consistently good actress and this role has already won her a lot of supporting actress critics awards. I honestly think she's very deserving of the Oscar too. I haven't seen Roma yet (it's on the list, I'm getting to it!) to compare, but Vice and The Favourite don't hold up to the standard of King's acting in this.
A lot of If Beale Street Could Talk felt like it was being artsy for the sake of it. There was a fairly long scene where we see Fonny working a bit of wood. I really couldn't see any need for it to be there, certainly not in that form. It was one of many bits that didn't seem to have much relevance. I'm a little undecided on... well... a lot of things. The voiceovers, the characters that pop up outside the main cast...
All in all it felt like there were too many things it was trying to be. A romance, a crime drama, a discourse on racial inequality? It left me with more questions than answers.
What you should do
Here we are again. I probably wouldn't recommend this to anyone, but yet again I'm in the minority.

I'm afraid that I was too bewildered by what was going on to pay attention to any of the things I might want... if invisible fridges really are functional though I'd be interested in one.

I know I'm in the minority here, but I felt the pacing of the front half was slow, and Drax's character had completely changed for no given reason. A lot of the unique aspects of the original that I enjoyed were over-exploited in this one, and the heavy handedness kept the humor from hitting the way it did in the first.

Itās a game that doesnāt tell you a lot about whatās going on, with the exception of the two possible climaxes. Itās also a game that intentionally misleads you, and expects you to bang your head up against a wall until you figure out the solution

Great Read
I have enjoyed this world and characters since the first Farseer trilogy. This was a great read. It felt like saying goodbye to old friends. The story was interesting and I cared about the characters a lot. Robin Hobb created a beautiful world with complex and fascinating characters and while the story was sad, it was a wonderful book.
