"Dr. Strangelove showed me, I suppose taught me, a lot about comedy. The stuff thatโ€™s funniest is the stuff that scares us most โ€” because all good comedy comes out of fear of death, fear of humiliation, fear of public awkwardness, fear of, you know, all those kinds of things. To have truly, really dark comedy where at the end of the film everyone in the world dies, that was very funny to me. I went to the Kubrick exhibition and there was this whole section on how originally the film had ended with a gigantic pie fight, and it was cut; but in a way I get what that might have been going for โ€” the fact that it is all so ridiculous."

Regarding header sizes, I find the size of 1170x192 to be an incredibly limiting image size to work with. I can tell you from experience that with such a narrow size, you won't be able to get many good header images for movies. Lots of characters will end up being awkwardly cropped out with their heads partially cut off, or the scale of the shot will be completely lost. It makes a lot of the headers look pretty silly, and even much lower quality. I don't mean to make a fuss on my first day on Smashbomb, but I do think it would be in the site's best interest aesthetically to increase the height of the headers. Thanks for your time and consideration.

Hi @5 Minute Movie Guy - thanks for the feedback. Very much appreciated.

The headers basically have to be either fixed or responsive (for mobile devices). We tested them over a period of time over a very wide range of devices/resolutions/screen-sizes and after much deliberation, the best compromise was the current solution. I know it isn't perfect, but they are primarily 'mood' images with the full gallery available separately on the media section of each item.

Please do keep that feedback coming! ๐Ÿ™‚

Ah, I hadn't even considered the mobile option! I'll download the app now and check it out. Thanks for the response!

I was really surprised by this book. It's a collection of poetry, prose and inspirational artwork. I was really drawn in to the first collection, written as if by Aphrodite herself. The following collections were more personal and hit so many chords for me - they are about being a woman, about worries, about abuse, about relationships with other people, about relationships with yourself and about sexuality. A lot in there was so truthful and raw. Things that need to be said. I actually feel lighter for reading them, as if they have enabled me to let go parts of myself that weighed me down. I would usually turn away from books like this, but I'm glad that I managed to get a copy and read it.

This one has been done to death really. Child/children taken by bad people. Parent goes nuts to get them back. But despite this fact... I still love watching them. Especially where it's a woman that is on a mission. At this point I'd like any would be attackers and burglars that after all these movies, and many Home Alone marathons that I feel very prepared to defend my territory... and I'm watched a lot of CSI, so I'm getting away with everything too.

Where The Strangers was predictable and dull, this was predictable and yet still entertaining. It's not going to win any awards, and was annoyingly a little short, but still a good watch to pass the time.

Couldnโ€™t put it down
Adam Kay delights us with his diary entries of his time as a Junior doctor. I was gripped from the moment I started and couldnโ€™t put the book down! I found myself getting pulled in with the highs and lows of his chosen profession. There were lots of giggles to be had, and some solemn moments also. But more than this it shines yet further light on those men and women that sacrifice a lot in the pursuit of healing others and the poor conditions that they find themselves working in. Thanks @Smashbomb for picking me in the giveaway, and allowing me the opportunity to read something so thought provoking.

I seem to have a thing for Yaoi--Boys Love--and since I like my M/M Romances, why wouldn't I?

This was kinda cute once it got going. I wasn't sure what it was going to be like but once I started it, I fell into it.

To me, it read like a typical M/M Romance--a friends to lovers sort of thing, only they were step brothers.

I just have to admit I like to see it happen, because I don't always have the best imagination with books, I don't picture my characters in my head like others do. So having the comic strip helps me a lot.

Off to start Brother 2 to see if it's as good as this one.

I borrowed this book from the library, assuming it would be another light, smut-laced Sylvia Day read. A mindless, fun, beach read. However, for a fairly short novella, Ms. Day certainly packed it with deep emotion and sincerity, which took me by surprise. Parts of the story were funny or exciting, while other parts were gut-wrenching. I was pleasantly surprised by Butterfly in Frost. The story was quite complex, emotionally, in a very short number of pages. It could have stood to be longer, and felt like it probably skipped over a lot of details in a couple of spots. However, for a novella, this really grabbed my emotional heartstrings in a stronger way than I expected it to.

Brilliant cast
Not your usual storyline
Absolutely brilliant, could not recommend more!
I find with a lot of shows that it's easy to predict what the story is leading up to, but not with this one. It is unlike any other series I have watched and keeps you on your toes. Multiple times I thought I'd figured out where it was going but OH NO, another twist gets thrown in.

I cannot wait for the next series after the cliff hanger series 1 ended on. I'm sure it will be just as thought provoking and exciting as the first.

(If you like to read, I think people who like Manifest would enjoy reading 'The Three' by Sarah Lotz)

Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019)
2019 | Horror
Yesterday, I saw the movie based on the series of short story collections that inspired future makers of horror. It affected me so deeply that I decided to skip a Rifftrax screening. The actual film collects multiple horror tropes: haunted house, creepy hallways, reanimated corpses, spiders, supernatural serial killer, books. Most of the stories startle, but never terrify. The creature designs are phenomenal. The ending is kind of a letdown after all the thrills. However, one story completely disturbed me. Not the story or the creature, but the style. It used a lot of anticipation and narrative, but never showed much of the horror. It just built up tension and had one huge scare leading to a horrifying "ending" for one of the characters.
