AJaneClark (3975 KP) rated This is Going to Hurt: Secret Diaries of a Junior Doctor in Books
Sep 2, 2019
Couldn’t put it down
Adam Kay delights us with his diary entries of his time as a Junior doctor. I was gripped from the moment I started and couldn’t put the book down! I found myself getting pulled in with the highs and lows of his chosen profession. There were lots of giggles to be had, and some solemn moments also. But more than this it shines yet further light on those men and women that sacrifice a lot in the pursuit of healing others and the poor conditions that they find themselves working in. Thanks @Smashbomb for picking me in the giveaway, and allowing me the opportunity to read something so thought provoking.

I seem to have a thing for Yaoi--Boys Love--and since I like my M/M Romances, why wouldn't I?
This was kinda cute once it got going. I wasn't sure what it was going to be like but once I started it, I fell into it.
To me, it read like a typical M/M Romance--a friends to lovers sort of thing, only they were step brothers.
I just have to admit I like to see it happen, because I don't always have the best imagination with books, I don't picture my characters in my head like others do. So having the comic strip helps me a lot.
Off to start Brother 2 to see if it's as good as this one.

AT (1676 KP) rated Butterfly in Frost in Books

I borrowed this book from the library, assuming it would be another light, smut-laced Sylvia Day read. A mindless, fun, beach read. However, for a fairly short novella, Ms. Day certainly packed it with deep emotion and sincerity, which took me by surprise. Parts of the story were funny or exciting, while other parts were gut-wrenching. I was pleasantly surprised by Butterfly in Frost. The story was quite complex, emotionally, in a very short number of pages. It could have stood to be longer, and felt like it probably skipped over a lot of details in a couple of spots. However, for a novella, this really grabbed my emotional heartstrings in a stronger way than I expected it to.

Brilliant cast
Not your usual storyline
Absolutely brilliant, could not recommend more!
I find with a lot of shows that it's easy to predict what the story is leading up to, but not with this one. It is unlike any other series I have watched and keeps you on your toes. Multiple times I thought I'd figured out where it was going but OH NO, another twist gets thrown in.
I cannot wait for the next series after the cliff hanger series 1 ended on. I'm sure it will be just as thought provoking and exciting as the first.
(If you like to read, I think people who like Manifest would enjoy reading 'The Three' by Sarah Lotz)

Lenard (726 KP) rated Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark (2019) in Movies

Yesterday, I saw the movie based on the series of short story collections that inspired future makers of horror. It affected me so deeply that I decided to skip a Rifftrax screening. The actual film collects multiple horror tropes: haunted house, creepy hallways, reanimated corpses, spiders, supernatural serial killer, books. Most of the stories startle, but never terrify. The creature designs are phenomenal. The ending is kind of a letdown after all the thrills. However, one story completely disturbed me. Not the story or the creature, but the style. It used a lot of anticipation and narrative, but never showed much of the horror. It just built up tension and had one huge scare leading to a horrifying "ending" for one of the characters.
