Skipping forward 28 years, John Hughes’ jewel in the crown owes a lot to Billy Wilder. It also borrows from every genre in the book. Reflecting its charming protagonist, this film is smart – so much smarter than it first appears. It allows you to be part of it from the very start, directing dialogue right at you out of the screen, and hopes you get every wink, nod and irreverent moment. We’ve all been teenagers, we all sing in the shower, we all lied to our parents, we all wished we could join a parade as guest of honour and drive a Ferrari into a ditch! Cool but geeky. Great music, great laughs, great dialogue, and the character Matthew Broderick will always be. An influence on every teen movie worth its salt ever since!

I can't believe this is the first time I've ever watched this movie. If we're being honest, the plot line doesn't really make a whole lot of sense. Like it does, but it doesn't, ya know? And I know this is supposed to be one of the best rom-com's of all time and I can definitely see that, that makes sense to me. But this plotline is so weird.

I really enjoyed the film, don't get me wrong. It just definitely wasn't what I was expecting. I have this really weird thing about Tom Cruise. I don't know what it is, he's just not one of my favorites, but I really loved him in this film. He had me crying, that's for sure. He's a standout, no doubt about it.

Rolling Stone's 485th greatest album of all time

I listened to this album a lot in my teens. While not Pearl Jam's best/biggest album, it was their newest at the time so more relevant to me. I would have said I loved it then, but I am struggling to see why now. While Last Exit, Corduroy and Better Man are good songs, they don't quite shine enough to let us forget all the nonsense on there. Spin the Black Circle is a dire attempt at punk and the rest is just not great. I think maybe I loved this so much in the 90s because I couldn't stand Eddie Vedder's voice and it seems a little toned down on this album than on others. Not quite as much like the scene in Ted.
