ClareR (5874 KP) rated The Woman on the Bridge in Books

This is a wonderful story based on Sheila O’Flanagans own grandmothers experiences.
It’s the 1920’s and Ireland is fighting for its independence. There’s so much going on in this story: the fight for Irelands independence; domestic violence; poverty; tuberculosis; women’s rights; emigration of the Irish to the USA and other European countries.
Winifred O’Leary is a strong woman who wants to be independent, both as a woman and as an Irish woman. The book doesn’t go too much into the ins and outs of the political situation, but I’ve certainly learnt more about what went on during this time. It was a hard time to be living in.
Winnie’s husband certainly experiences a lot of this hardship. He’s imprisoned for his actions with his fellow freedom fighters.
This is a love story as well as a story about the politics at the time. I really enjoyed it and I realise that it was first and foremost a love story - and an enjoyable one at that!

Multiple pov (1 more)
More than you'd expect
A surprising twist or two in these pages. Told through multiple POVs some main character, a few that are just observations from not quite random people but still ties into the story. Each person's pov is told to an unknown third party that they occasionally interact with/ talk to as they explain the events that happened so long ago that inspired a song. Some of the names are hard to pronounce like Lal's full name.
From the description and introduction it may seem a love story, which it is in a way, but it's also much more; it's a story about love, death, obligation, loyalty, betrayal, forgiveness, groing

The story of young Veda Sultanfuss (Chlumsky) who is coming of age during the summer goes through a ton of mixed feelings and emotions with her friend Thomas (Caulkin) in this coming of age story. Harry Sultenfuss (Aykryod) owns and runs a funeral parlor and is still morning his wife finds a new love interest in Shelly (Curtis) and Shelly has try try to win over Veda and try to act like her mom. This a true family story and one to not watch alone.
This movie has one of the saddest endings of all time and I can't watch it with out balling my eyes each and every time.

All this book did was frustrate me! Chick-lit is definitely not my favourite genre, however I can cope with it on occasions. This book is one of those that reminds me why I steer clear of chick-lit!
Lovely little fairy tale story line, boy meets girl, girl meets boy and guess what... that fall in love! But do they admit it? Nope, not until your brain is crying from the nonsense of it all! I wish these books would come up with a different story line of boy and girl love each other but don't tell each other for ages, Pride & Prejudice tells that story perfectly well, we don't need anymore!

The Boy in the Cuckoo-Clock
This is the story about a boy that was born in the coldest day ever, and his heart froze, so, to save his life, the nurse replaced his heart for a Cockoo-Clock. The story is written by the boy perspective and it’s sweet the innocent way he thinks and feels.
“I wanted to go to school. I mean, who never tried strawberry’s with sugar wouldn’t order it for desert.”
He falls in love with this girl with big glasses. And it’s the story about how him and his Cockoo-Clock react to the way he feels about every feeling love can give

[Storm Warriors] by [Elisa Carbone] has been on my reading 'pile' for sometime. As a middle school teacher I love to add books to my library. This one is definitely a gem.
The story is about the Pea Island Life Saving Station. These stations were what was to become the Coast Guard. What makes this station's story unique is it was fully manned by African Americans at a time when Jim Crow was rearing his ugly head.
I would love to read this one with my seventh graders.

In the story of The Mudhogs, the three pigs named Piggy, Piggles, and Piglet love mud. They want to play in the mud but there isn’t any in the barn that they live in. So they travel the world looking for mud… and when they get home they learn an important lesson.
This is a really cute book that all kids would love. It’s easy to understand and is written by a kid for a kid. The illustrations are adorable and the story is funny and cute. Recommended for ages 3-10.
