"Well, obviously, I would have to say my dad’s movie, Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song is one of them, for sure. You know, I was lucky in that case not only to see the film and see the first movie where an overtly empowered black power character goes up against the system and survives. That was the first of its kind. But also to see my father insist on working with a multiracial crew. He had women on it, he had hippies on it, Hispanics, Asians, you know, and really bring all these folks together. That was super inspiring, to see that you could take sort of a multiracial, sometimes ragtag crew and make the first overtly revolutionary film in America and win and change the game. Because after that, Shaft came. Shaft was written for a white detective by a guy named Ernest Tidyman, and when my dad’s film Sweetback made money, they rewrote it with a black guy, and they got a young guy to do the music from Stax Records named Isaac Hayes. My dad, when he did Sweetback, had used Earth, Wind & Fire. So that was a super influential movie on me.Easy Rider was one I remember that just seemed to be the Peace and Freedom Party movement, in a way, reflected on screen. [Editor’s note: the Peace and Freedom Party was an organization founded in California in 1967 with the goal of ending the Vietnam War.]"

"I don't know much about her. We're going to be playing some shows with her, so I'm holding her in this great realm of mystery until then. The drummer is fucking amazing, Zach Hill - he played with that band Hella. They're playing this fucking insane music. I don't even know what their set up is like. I don't know what she's like, what her group is like. And in a way that's why I'm enjoying it so much at this time, because it's still new to me. You can go on the internet and find out everything about a group and before you know it you're meeting them, and that's a great thing about my life. But there's also times when you want to be suspended in the mystery of what you're listening to, and that's where I'm at with her right now. And what a weird name... Is that really her name? I like it when people can be technical, or use elements of technique. I love technique. I think technique has probably more beauty in it that the way I play - the punk rock, anything-goes kinda way. But if you're lucky, like Marnie Stern, you can do both. You get this ridiculous shit where they're all trying to play these intricate little bits together, and then, because they're weirdos, you get this other kind of music that you haven't heard before."

"When I was about 15, Danny and Mick [Quinn, Supergrass bassist] lived in this row of cottages that was literally 10 metres from my family house. That was our base; we’d get together in Mick’s living room. I feel very lucky to have been in a band at that time because we were still approaching music – playing live, writing and recording – the way they had since the beginning; it was the last little window where there was only two-inch tape recording, just a few A&R men around who would come to gigs and stuff, no internet, mobile phones. It seems weird now! We were in the house getting stoned and playing loads of records, everything from Pink Floyd to Gong, Muppets albums, Zappa and Patti Smith. A big one for us was Brian Eno’s Here Come The Warm Jets – it was one we were really hooked on. For somebody so experimental he had killer melodies and the way he double-tracked his voice is just really cool. The production and instrumentation are kind of understated and hint at lo-fi, but in an honest way. We had a meeting with him in New York in the early 00s about producing us. I don’t think it was anything creative that was the issue, it was a boring calendar thing from what I remember, but it was great to meet him and have a chat."

"This is a bit of a change in mood from the last song! For a long time Rod was a hero and an icon to me. “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy” is just such a confident song and I remember listening to it a lot as I was starting to perform. I think all artists have a different persona they go into, or a switch they hit when they walk on stage, I would listen to this as a warmup song to get to that place before I performed. “I was lucky enough to re-record the song with Rod Stewart about a year ago - one of those moments when it really came full circle for me. My A&R told me they were planning to do a Rod Stewart tribute album with a bunch of different artists. She first presented a different song and I said “that would be amazing! But I’m definitely doing “Da Ya Think I’m Sexy”, right?” I think I even kicked out somebody else who was in line to do it! We recorded it, produced it and then performed it together at the VMAs. “Now we have this cool relationship where I see him when I’m in Vegas and I’m going to try to see one of his shows. Rod Stewart is my rock ‘n’ roll dad! It’s one of those rare experiences when you can say ‘it’s nice to meet your heroes.’"

I have been re-reading these HAWKEYE TPBs before bed, as a) they're a heckuva lot of fun, b) I've read them before, and c) I won't need to re-read them the next morning because I forgot what I read before I fell asleep. Peachy keen!

Outside of my wife, no one is really that close to me, 'cept maybe our dogs, Fez and Gracie, but neither of them reads. If you were to know me, you'd know that Matt Fraction's run on HAWKEYE is one of my favorite comic reads ever!

This volume brings the focus on Katie-Kate and Lucky ("Pizza Dog"), as she gives it a go as a private investigator in L.A., or, as the late comedian Bill Hicks called it, "Hell A". There is a more than fair amount of humor, and as it winds down to the final issue in this volume, a bit of seriousness, as Kate learns a deep, dark secret about her father.

As much as love Fraction's witty dialogue and pacing, I have an equally hearty amount of fondness for Annie Wu's art. Seriously, there have been some great artists for Kate, but, in my eyes, none captured her as well as Ms. Wu.

You want a fun read for your summer? This one would be perfect! And I can even recommend it to those not as acquainted with comics as some of us! #goodtimes!

Sannah has just reached adulthood (in her clan's eyes) and is thinking about how to survive the winter plus who she might end up with. What she doesn't expect is to be taken from her clan along with other women and everyone she knows killed or left to starve. Memmet is doing the best he can for his tribe and if that means kidnapping other women so his survive then so be it.

These two are incredibly well-matched and, as the story progresses, you find out just how 'lucky' Sannah was to have been claimed by Memmet. Meka is there to show just how bad it could be for those taken.

This is a wonderful novel. Being as it is set in ancient times there is a whole different set of world-building going on which I thought was incredibly well done. The characters all have their foibles and idiosyncrasies but remain true to who they are and their time. Sannah's fears and misconceptions were well-written, showing her divided loyalties with her hopes and concerns for the future.

I thought this was a really great read that I thoroughly enjoyed and have no hesitation in recommending.
