"Okay, yeah, I did play Birdy in the film directed by the always amazing Sir Alan Parker. If you saw the movie, you should read the book. The hypnotic magic of Wharton’s prose is pure poetry. After you read the book, watch, or re-watch the film and see how right we actually got it."

Two wasted hours about the author of The Two Towers: Tolkien (2019) Review
“Tolkien” has little or no magic about it, except the ordinary everyday magic which helps almost two hours disappear slowly and drearily when large stupid folk like the Craggus buy their tickets. It is inclined to be dull in the middle (and also the beginning and the end); dress in drab colours (chiefly tweeds and mud browns); wear out your patience as it regales you with the edited vignettes of J R R Tolkien’s early life through his fever dream flashbacks in the trenches of World War I, the scenes of which are surprisingly, jarringly graphic and provide no deep fruity laughs at all.

Shadow Magic (Havemercy #2)

I LOVED Havemercy, but was pretty disappointed with Shadow Magic. I tend to dislike it when you completely change the protagonists in your sequel and barely even mention them (Royston got a cameo, but he was never a POV character so I don't think that counts.

The authors tend to have about 3/4 of the book be set-up and character development, which I didn't mind as much in Havemercy because I just loved the characters and their dynamics, but it was hard to get through Shadow Magic. I was not as impressed with these characters- I liked caius in the first book but he seemed unnecessarily over the top in this one and I guess everything just all seemed a lot more cliche.
