Black Arts, Tarts & Gypsy Carts ( Spells & Caramels book 2)
By Erin Johnson
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

A carnival bakery booth. A deadly magic show. Is it the perfect recipe for murder or a clever sleight of hand?

Palace pastry chef Imogen is struggling to control her newfound magic and her potent feelings for the prince. So when the carnival rolls into the kingdom, she jumps at the chance to run the royal bakery booth. But her plan to escape her problems backfires when murder rocks the magician's table, and her dear friend is found holding the bloody saw.

Determined to cook up a way to keep Rhonda out of witch's prison, she sifts through the clues and the long list of suspects. Between devious dark magicians, cagey stage assistants, and a strongman with more to offer than just muscles, everyone at the fairgrounds seems to be hiding secrets - even Rhonda.

With the final night of the carnival approaching, will Imogen's shaky powers be enough to flush out the murderer before her good friend ends up on the chopping block?

This series is so different and quirky. The characters just make you smile. Iggy has to be my favourite I mean a flame with personality and a sense of humour what’s not to love! It’s just such a pleasure to read.

What starts off as a story about the life of a child in a fishing community, soon turns into a seemingly hopeless struggle for their lives. It’s dangerous to be a woman in the 1600’s. Dancing, laughing, drinking - all of these simple, everyday things can result in an accusation of witchcraft. Funnily enough, if a man does them, that’s ok (I found myself becoming increasingly frustrated with the injustice of it all!).
The young girls are the ones that hold the story together. They are the link between the accused women (their mothers, aunt and another villager) and the King’s prisoner, Anna. Anna is trusted to ‘care’ for the witches whilst they’re held in the Witches hold - a thoroughly inhumane incarceration. She’s a woman with an education, so I expected for her to treated a lot worse than she was.
There’s a great mix of history and magic in this, although done in such a way as the magic didn’t seem out of place - and fitted in perfectly with the rest of the book. It was interesting to learn about the way the Sámi were regarded by the rest of Finn-mark (I’m unsure of the spelling!) - even though it wasn’t good (they weren’t Christians, and therefore dangerous).
It was a really engrossing read - I loved it.

What an interesting book! I guess I could describe myself best as a skpetic...it's not that I don't believe. I've seen the power of prayer works it's magic, but I've also seen many unanswered prayers too. This book made me believe just a little bit more. How can one question the logic & sincerity of a 4 year old?
This book is normally not my style, but it was a wonderful story, made all the more interesting by the fact that it really happened. If nothing else check it out for that purpose alone. You don't have to believe to take something from this book.

Vivid characters
A fantasy world with a mix of its own mythology and steampunk science.
Beautifully written. Poignant, flawed but full of hope and wonder.
I really enjoyed this book. Its different but beautifully written. The characters are flawed but they all have a part to play that makes you want to keep reading. The author created an interesting world of mythology, ancient wondrous, unreachable lost cities. Magic and science co exist in a steampunk like culture, but also highlights the social and personal struggles of the people who live in it. Apathy, addiction, corruption, revolution and hope. Some people say it's slow, just keep reading, its worth it.

The story line of Artemis Fowl is something I've never read before and has such imagination and whimsy sure to peak any middle age boy or girl (or 28 year old adult's) interest. Artemis is an intelligent 12 year old boy from a long line of Fowl's and wealth. He along with his bodyguard go on a journey to find out more the secret world of fairy's. This secret magic land of fairies, trolls and other mysterious creatures is different than any I've ever read. I can't wait to read the rest of the series. I can only see it getting even better from here!

The Secret Life Of Pets 2 (2019) is like three Saturday morning cartoons mashed into one.
Picture the scene: Illumination writing room, circa 2017.

Plans are well underway for the TV spinoff of “The Secret Life Of Pets” and the team have broken down around a dozen shorts to fill up the schedules when suddenly the word comes down that the studio have decided they want a theatrical sequel instead. Writer 1: Okay, shall we start from scratch?

Writer 2: *shrugs* Nah, it’s nearly lunch, let’s just jam the ideas together until we hit the magic 90-minute mark.

Writer 1: Done. Let’s get lunch.
