Wow what a story is all I can say! This book totally blew my mind and at times I had trouble believing parts of it were real and it terrified me even more to know that they were.

Tara Westover never set foot in a classroom until she was 17 years old. Raised by Mormon survivalists in the mountains of Idaho her life was incredibly different than anything I can even imagine. With a midwife/herbalist for a mother and a father who operated a junkyard and prepared for the end of the world and was obsessed with the Illuminati Tara was horribly unprepared for life as she set foot into the academic world.

With no one to make sure Tara and her brothers and sisters had an education or even basic healthcare Tara decided to educate herself. At the age of 17 she had never even heard of the Holocaust much to the shock and disbelief of her fellow students and professor. With determination and perseverance Tara went on from never being in a classroom to receiving a a PhD from Cambridge University.
All the while Tara still struggled with a sense of loyalty to her family yet a desire to recreate herself into something more.

This was an incredible journey and I thank Tara for sharing it with us!

The pale-skinned, black-eyed baby is a bad omen. That’s one thing the people on the old plantation are sure of. The other is that Miss Rue – midwife, healer, crafter of curses – will know what to do.

But for once Rue doesn’t know. Times have changed since her mother Miss May Belle held the power to influence the life and death of her fellow slaves. Freedom has come. The master’s Big House lies in ruins. But this new world brings new dangers, and Rue’s old magic may be no match for them.

When sickness sweeps across her tight-knit community, Rue finds herself the focus of suspicion. What secrets does she keep amidst the charred remains of the Big House? Which spells has she conjured to threaten their children? And why is she so wary of the charismatic preacher man who promises to save them all?

Rue understands fear. It has shaped her life and her mother’s before her. And now she knows she must face her fears – and her ghosts – to find a new way forward for herself and her people.

I liked it but it didn’t completely grab me I lost my way a little in the middle. The story and telling we’re really interesting. I just couldn’t pick back up from where it lost me.

Murder at a Séance
Midwife Sarah Brandt is surprised when her mother, Mrs. Decker, begs Sarah to join her at a séance. Mrs. Decker is hoping to reach Maggie, Sarah’s older sister, and obtain forgiveness for something that happened before she passed. Sarah goes, but nothing she experiences convinces her that it is at all real. However, Mrs. Decker goes back a second time, and one of the group members is murdered. They quickly call in Detective Sergeant Frank Malloy. The lights were out, and everyone was holding hands, so how was the victim killed?

Between the how and the who, I was pulled into this story and couldn’t put it down. There are some great twists along the way, and the climax is logical, although one part bothered me. It’s a very minor complaint. Sarah and Frank continue to be strong leads, ably sharing the view point of the story in a way that is easy to follow. They even made me laugh a few times as I was reading. While we don’t see Frank’s family, we do get to see more of the people in Sarah’s life, and I love spending time with them. The new characters are fantastic, and help bring New York City of 1897 to life. I always get lost in Sarah and Frank’s world, and this book was no exception. If you are looking for a historical mystery, I highly recommend this book.
