Sarah (7798 KP) rated My Name is Monster in Books

Post-apocalyptic books are a dime a dozen and I've read many over the years, with varying degrees of success. When I first picked up My Name is Monster I was worried it would be nothing new, but it's actually a very interesting read that I struggled to put down. The beginning of the story isn't anything different with a lone survivor scavenging in an empty world (I kept picturing something similar to 28 Days Later minus the infected), but it's how it's written that really got me hooked. I really liked the writing style and the short chapters, and I think Monster's plight was interesting. My biggest issue was with the second part of the book. There's a lot of questioning around mother, creator etc which was fine, but I found it got a little rambling at times which made it slower to get through. I also had to suspend my disbelief at how easy something was for her as it is a teensy bit ridiculous.
But that said, this is still a very enjoyable book and worth a read, especially if you enjoy post-apocalyptic stories.

Psyche is the human Princess whose looks have stunned her cities inhabitants into following her around and giving her gifts all her life. She can do no wrong in their eyes. But in giving the gifts to Psyche and not to the Gods, they've angered them and Psyche must be sacrificed by her family to marry a winged monster. But not all is as it seems.
I was really drawn into this story so easily. I was intrigued by the person Psyche was forced into marrying and it was amazing how quickly I came to like him. Of course I figured out who her husband was pretty quickly and the scenes between them were rather intimate at times and not always sexual.
Both Cupid and Psyche are looking for someone to love them for them and not for their looks. It was great to see the journey they both went on and I even cried at one point because I was so invested in them.
If you like mythology or any of Wendy Higgins' other book then you should give this a try.

It has a wonderful cast for a start - lead by Kevin Bacon and Fred Ward, and featuring the likes of Finn Carter, Michael Gross, and Reba McEntire, every character is likable (apart from that little shit Melvin) and you want them all to survive their ordeal, usually a rarity in this genre!
The chemistry between all of the actors is great, and makes for a frequently funny adventure. It has its fair share of bloodier moments that push into horror territory, and in that regards, the mostly daylit Nevada desert setting is something different to enjoy. The practical effects are extremely B-Movie, but it works so well with the overall tone.
The narrative takes a little while to set everything up, but when things get moving, it doesn't stop, moving from set piece to set piece, that are all memorable as hell, from pole vaulting from boulder to boulder, to fishing with homemade bombs, to a over the top l, laughable amount of guns being fired when a Graboid breaches an underground bunker.
Tremors is fucking great and deserves so much praise for what it is - it's own little pocket of comedy horror, with its own rules. Long live Tremors.

Hel's attitude is as sassy as ever, and I love how she goes toe to toe with Eric. Maddison is a blast, although I know there is more to her than meets the eye. Raphael has a story he doesn't want to share, which just makes me want it all the more. All in all, this is a non-stop read, full of action and chaos.
Ending on a cliffhanger (just like book one), this will definitely leave you wanting more. A great second book, and definitely recommended by me.
