A rich sensory experience until around the third act when I began choking on soap - could this be the most beautiful looking + sounding mob movie out there? Maybe, what with its otherworldly Thomas Newman score (which I can't believe people complained about) and downright tantalizing cinematography, paired with such lush period detail that never feels overbearing for a single second. Unfortunately (though expectedly) *too* pristine for its own good - tries so unsubtly to be a ''''serious'''' movie that's above the violent pulp this so desperately needed. It would be another thing entirely if they replaced it with something to say but this is perhaps the most simple mob story ever told. Initially presents itself as subdued mafia eye candy, which I was on board with until the jarring tonal shift beginning with the bank heists where it reveals its moral fiber to be the cloying relationship between Hanks and this annoying kid who can't act for shit. And don't even get me started on that dumbass narration which just spoon feeds you what this is supposed to be 'about' as if it wasn't already blatantly obvious. But Paul Newman and Jude Law are swell, and it's got a fair amount of good scenes that handle the simple melodrama well. Dazzling aesthetic showcase meets cringe Oscar bait which has been rendered mostly useless now that we have other movies of the genre/premise that aren't afraid to have some bite.

How can a movie that does practically everything wrong still be so thoroughly enchanting? A fundamentally baffling, scalding hot trainwreck of epic proportions that hasn't held up to the passage of time really at all - a miscalculated weirdo relic of pop culture history. I think a lot of this film's appeal has to do with the fact that it's complete lightning in a bottle - for better or for worse we will never see another movie like this again: mopey, homoerotic rococo vampires stumble around through a flounderingly-paced pre-π˜›π˜Έπ˜ͺ𝘭π˜ͺ𝘨𝘩𝘡 template for lectures on moral dilemmas and a gallery of some of the most lush period visuals of the 90s (from the sweltering plantations of the 1700s south to the decadence of gothic European high-life, it's all orgasmically displayed). Also this is maybe the best use of "Sympathy For The Devil" in a film, even if it is an inferior cover. The fact that Brad Pitt wanted to die the entire time while filming for this woefully underconstructed character actually makes it the only thing that works with it, considering his only defining feature is... that he wants to die. A totally birdbrained brothel of jagged writing and wicked scenery-chewing from a glorious cast (you know you're in for a treat when Christian Slater gives the most restrained performance lol), actually pretty great even though it disembowels a lot of the original text's depth. Full-tilt camp.

I think this may have been the very first fantasy book I read, at the tender age of maybe 11-12.

As such, I'm always going to view this title with rose-tinted glasses as it was my warm welcome to the world of heroic fantasy.

Here's the plot outline - Druss is a badass with a big axe, who's known throughout the world as such.

He believes he is to die in his 60th year after seeing a vision in his younger days, which he now is. Living in isolation after the death of his wife, he has sworn never to fight again.

Meanwhile, a warlord named Ulric, leader of a warring, tribal people known as the Nadir has united the feuding clans and amassed an army bigger than any that exist in the south, and he is coming to stamp his rule on the Drenai empire.

In order to get from north to south, he must pass the ancient fortress of Dros Delnoch. This is the battle ground.

Druss, having heard of the army one million strong heading to crush his people, Druss decides it's once more unto the breach, and travels to the doomed fortress to make his last stand with the forces there.

Lots of engaging characters, moral qualms, and of course visceral battle scenes full of heroics, this is a classic tale of underdog army vs army.

I just bloody love it.
