The Downward Spiral is one of the last great works of art produced in the 20th century.
Moving beyond the abrasive noise of the Broken/Fixed era while making callbacks to the dark pop music of Pretty Hate Machine and showcasing the ambient music that would eventually win Trent Reznor an Oscar; standout tracks on the The Downward Spiral are as varied as the scorching Mr Self-Destruct, the groove of Heresy and Closer or the celestial beauty of A Warm Place and the title track.
The album also features an ambition and aesthetic that still informs Nine Inch Nails over twenty years later.

Key (10 KP) rated The Night Watch in Books

'Tender and tragic, set against the turbulent backdrop of wartime Britain'
This is my absolute favourite book, so I'm likely to be biased. The characters feel like real people, and their experiences and thoughts feel as palpable as your own. Let this book sweep you through love and heartbreak, enveloped by war-torn 40s London. The unusual plot layout of this book (moving backwards through time, starting at the end and finishing at the start) may be confusing at the first read, but provides dramatic irony which is integral to the book's brilliance.

For me, this episode in the Shadows of the Apt series was a real struggle. From a fairly slow, crawl of an opening it barely got moving until the last hundred pages or so. This book is key to the overall series but it really felt like a chore reading it. Che's character development in this book installs her as one of the most important characters in the series, and her link to the new Empress sets up a lot of the conflict to come, but it just felt so dragged out.
A must-read if one is to appreciate the whole series but from a fairly first 4 books this was a definite low.

A moving life story
It's impressive that this book can fit virtually an entire life story into such a short book. And for the most part it's a really interesting story. Lucy is an endearing character although she is a little odd and strange at times. I feel like some of her actions don't make sense and I found myself getting very frustrated at how her mother treated her and how she reacted to it, like it didn't make any sense. But I do admit that this could just be part of the message of the story itself.
Overally it's a well written book with a lovely story, it's just a shame that not much really happens.

I was so looking forward to this book, and almost bought it. But, the library had it, so I just rented it. THANK GOD I did.
I really, really, REALLY disliked this book until the last 90 pages or so. It was so slow moving, and this book isn't even that long! The chapters jump between multiple characters, all of whom are claiming this miraculous child that was seemingly dead. I thought it was fairly clear from the beginning that the reason the focus was on these families was because all of the events were related.
I loved Bellman and Black, hated the Thirteenth Tale, and mostly disliked this book. I'm wary to read another Setterfield book now.

Wesley and Quinn have a love to hate relationship. She blames him for her parents divorce and spends the entire book trying to get even. Cool premise, but it falls a bit flat for me.
the cover shows a food truck, but that doesn't show up until like 3/4 of the way through so I am not quite sure why it's the cover? In fact the whole cover is quite deceptive as to what is actually in the book. But moving on.
While I enjoy a good hate to love story this was just meh, the character of Quinn was naive, dumb, and easy to peg. I just couldn't get into it.

this is the second time I've read the book and it is still as good the second time. really enjoyed this book. a different story with a twist in the story. the connection between the two main characters is fantastic as well as the supporting characters, making this book romantic and funny. this book has some very hot steamy bits to it but they are not over done. a fantastic page turner and easy book to read. the story is fast paced moving from romantic and funny to misfortune very quickly. have the second book waiting as you will need to start it straight away. highly recommended.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2371 KP) rated Blessed Is The Busybody (Ministry Is Murder Mystery,#1) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
Aggie tries to do her job of supporting her preacher husband and raise their daughters in the best way she can. Avoiding scandal is her number one priority. So why then, is there a naked dead woman on her front doorstep? The characters lept off the page at me as if I'd known them for a long time even though this is a series debut. The plot was fan moving and fun as well. My only issue? I don't agree with the character's theology, but I didn't expect to, and I devoured the entire series.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2371 KP) rated Mr. Monk Is Open For Business (Mr. Monk, #18) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
Before Natalie and Monk can have an official grand opening for their new PI business, they wind up with two cases. First, there's the murder suspect who won't explain why he was moving a body in a vacant field. Then there's the mass shooter who vanished despite being surrounded by police.
Both of these mysteries are great and kept me engaged the entire way through. The characters and their growth are wonder as well, and the humor had me grinning when I wasn't outright laughing. Fans of the series will love it.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2371 KP) rated You Cannoli Die Once (Italian Restaurant Mystery, #1) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
After an injury leaves Eve unable to dance, she becomes the head chef at her family's Italian restaurant. One more, she arrives to find a dead man in the kitchen. She's even more shocked to learn the dead man is her grandmother's current boyfriend. Why was he there? And can Eve keep her grandmother out of prison?
The cast of characters was a little too large, and I had a hard time keeping them all straight at first. They came into focus as things went along, and the plot was always moving forward. An absolutely fun debut.
