For my kids!
I’m rating this for my sons. And if I’m honest, for my husband. They all get a lot out of it: it makes them leave the house when they otherwise wouldn’t; it gives the 3 of them something to talk about; it gives me time on my own. So what’s not to like?! To be honest, I don’t understand a single thing about it, even though they’ve tried to explain it to me. I think this is partly to do with the fact that I don’t want to understand. I LIKE that it’s something that the males in my house can go out and do together.
In conclusion, I’m not sure as this is a particularly fair review, but here it is. A happy mum and wife who gets some time on her own, and also gets some interesting days out when the boys want to do some event days!!

I enjoyed this novel, it is set from the vantage point of Jack, a five year old boy who is being kept prisoner with his mum in a garden shed which her kidnapper has converted into a special soundproof 'room'. Jack was born there, so his mother's frustrations on their situation goes over his innocent little head until around halfway through the book when he realises that Old Nick is a bad person. Still, he doesn't understand why. He has a very cute way of anthropomorphising his surroundings, his Rug, and Meltedy Spoon take on characteristics of their own. The only thing that let this book down is that it is sometimes hard for the reader to imagine it is actually a little boy speaking, as some complex feelings and emotions are expressed which are hard to imagine would be understood by a child. I guess though, that an adult writing as a child must be hard so the author must be given some leeway.

Couldn't put it down
Just finished this book last night. I havent been able to read much lately (busy working mum, boring I know 😂) but this book i couldn't put down. I was excited to find 5 minutes to get stuck back in to it. At first with some of the diary entry style writing I thought it might be a bit gone girl but it wasn't. It's so cleverly written and I found myself reading it fast paced as this felt how it was being written.
Quite a few good twists in the plot and the ending was great. I did find myself guessing some of the end a bit but I like to think of myself as a good detective lol. However it still drew me in and I didn't solve the full story. Gutted to have finished but can't wait to see what else the author has in store.

Emma (519 KP) rated Knives Out (2019) in Movies

Me and my mum had to kill a bit of time recently and decided to go to cinema, the strangest cinema I have been to, like an old fashioned flea pit. We had a choice of three movies: frozen 2, last christmas, or knives out. We chose knives out, not knowing what to expect.
We both thoroughly enjoyed this movie, it has an amazing ensemble cast, the only thing throwing us off being Daniel Craig's Southern American accent.
I enjoyed the fact each character has it's own quirks and back story, and I found humour in each of the characters.
It also kept me guessing right to the end, where usually I can tell who's done it within the first five minutes.
It's not a genre I have really watched before, but I can't wait for it to come onto DVD, we managed to spend our spare time watching a really enjoyable film, which to me was time well spent.

Charlotte Ozanne (108 KP) rated A Bad Moms Christmas (2017) in Movies

Before watching this film, I thought it was a spin-off to the Bad Mom's film series, I did not realise it is actually the sequel to the original film. I was a bit dubious as to how this movie would entertain, as most sequels tend to be worse than the original. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the Christmas version as it bested the first film. In my opinion, the comedy was top-notch (no surprise considering the immense cast). I would definitely recommend this film, though please take note of the age certification - it is 15 for a reason! I don't think you need to have seen the first film in order to watch this sequel. I couldn't remember the content first film despite remembering watching it at the cinema with my mum. There's only one small scene which ties the first film into it but you get the gist of what happened.

Oh dear, I am sad to say that once again, I am in the minority with this one as it has received many 4 and 5* reviews but not for me unfortunately.
I have to say that I am a fan of Harlen's work so this one won't put me off reading more in the future but after starting off really well, it struggled to keep my attention and I found myself skimming large sections which is never a good sign. I was unable to get into the story as I found it fragmented and the characters just didn't do it for me at all; Wilde is interesting and Hester has some great one-liners but that's about it.
My mum always says "you can't please everyone all of the time" so don't take my word for it and give it a go.
Thank you to Random House UK, Cornerstone and NetGalley for my advance copy in return for an honest review.
