A Gothic period piece
I saw this billed as a period murder mystery so had to check it out especially with a great cast line up.
The production is great from locations, sets and costumes. You feel like you are there at the time.
Christian Bale plays a detective to investigate a grisly murder at the Military training base for America. He enlists the help of a cadet who would be wider know as Edgar Allen Poe.
It was a bit slow at times without a lot action wise, the middle section is drawn out too much. The plot seemed a little odd but thankfully the final scenes bring it back on track.

David McK (3692 KP) rated A Death in Berlin (CI Schenke #3) in Books
Sep 7, 2025
Third entry in Simon Scarrow's Criminal Inspector Schenke series, all of which have an unusual setting of being in wartime (WW2) Berlin, with their protagonist a Criminal Investigator member of the German police force (*not* SS).
In this one, it's largely about gang warfare, with CI Schenke and his team (some of whom he has to be very careful around) pulled into the investigation of a murder in Berlin (hence the tile) as Hitler prepares to invade Poland, and finding this murder may be connected to another case they are investigating around forged food coupons.
As before, it's shocking that some of the stuff you read about here - specifically, the with-holding of those (non forged) coupons from the Jewish community - actually happened!

Murder, Symbolism and The Holy Gmail!
First off how on earth this hasn't been reviewed yet is beyond me!
I have to put this book in my read over and over category!
I love everything about this especially the symbolism!
It's a fast paced thriller that everyone should read, let's not forget it's filled with facts too!

Nan's attempts to get a date via an on-line dating service end in another murder for the twins to solve. Sadly, this was the last book in a great series. I still miss the adventures of these twins.

Annie Kincaid gets caught up in a web of murder and betrayal when she identifies a painting at a San Francisco museum as a forgery. Plenty of laughs to this cozy caper, and the characters were wonderful.
