Chris Hooker (419 KP) rated The Angel Makers in Books
Jan 12, 2018
I had high hopes for [The Angel Makers] by [Jessica Gregson]. I mean foreign land, war, infidelity, murder, and mystery, how could you go wrong? It did. The language was a bit cruder that I felt it needed to be even for character development. The beginning of the story started so well. The character of Sari was intriguing but as the book went on she seemed to get sucked into the shallowness of the rest of the characters. The ending just fizzled.

Suswatibasu (1703 KP) rated The Fact of A Body in Books

A modern day 'In Cold Blood'
This is a pretty incredibly written book about a real life murder investigation coinciding with the author's own harrowing experiences. While true crime is now a hot genre, Alexandria Marzano-Lesnevich has weaved together a humane story, a backdrop of how this horrifying crime occurred not dissimilar to how Truman Capote wrote In Cold Blood. However, her own horrific story parallels the investigation giving the entire novel a whole new dimension. Recommended read indeed.

Domonique (0 KP) rated Unlucky 13 (Women’s Murder Club, #13) in Books
May 12, 2018
Although this one wasn't my favorite of the murder club books, I still enjoyed reading it, more so for the characters than the plot. I love reading about these characters, not only reading about the going ons of their everyday lives but also their relationships with each other. I love reading about these women: their ups and downs, trials and tribulations and what makes them as awesome as they are. I hope there's going to be another in the series!

Ande Thomas (69 KP) rated The Black Monday Murders, Vol. 1: All Hail, God Mammon in Books
May 30, 2019
The story here is so good, and everything I could want in a comic. A murder investigation turned supernatural conspiracy encompassing the global financial market. Pulling strings that lead to or take advantage of economic downturns, the various schools rule the world from behind the veil of a free market. The art is so dark and brooding, the characters intense and vibrant, I'm buying this by the issue and the trade, and eventually, when an omnibus is released, I'll buy that too.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2379 KP) rated Kilt Dead (Liss MacCrimmon Mysteries, #1) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
Liss MacCrimmon has returned to her hometown in Maine to help her aunt run the Scottish Emporium she owns. But when the local busy body winds up dead in the stock room, Liss must clear herself of murder. I liked the characters well enough, but there wasn't enough plot to sustain a 300 pages novel. It would have worked better at 200 pages.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2379 KP) rated Slay Ride (Christopher Miller Holiday Thriller, #1) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
A complaint about a bad shuttle driver leads to a kidnapping and possible murder. Meanwhile, FBI agent Christopher Miller is called back to the field for a robbery that is more than it appears. Yes, these two plots cross, and the suspense keeps the pages turning. However, I found the language and gore in the book to be too much for my tastes.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2379 KP) rated 11th Hour (Women's Murder Club, #11) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
The Women's Murder Club only takes on two cases this time around. First, there are the skulls found in an actor's garden. Then there's the man killing drug dealers. I was actually surprised to find that the ladies worked together to solve one of these cases, which hasn't happened for a while. In the end, it's a Patterson book, but it was fun.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2379 KP) rated Murder With Puffins (Meg Langslow, #2) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
A romantic weekend on an island in Maine is anything but for Meg and Michael when they find her family already at the family cabin. That's before a hurricane arrives and strands them with an island packed with birders and a killer. While this book still has the humor of the first in the series, it also features a stronger mystery.

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2379 KP) rated Access Denied (Turing Hopper, #3) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
Artificial Intelligence Personality Turing Hopper is excited to finally have a clue to the location of a criminal she needs to track down. However, her PI friend Tim gets accused of a murder when he goes to investigate. The characters are still very real, both human and AIP, and the plot is fast moving. Just read the series in order.
