"Each time I watch this film, I try to keep count of all of the characters. There are at least twenty-five significant roles and so very many outstanding women. This is a perfect Altman film and the one to start with if you haven’t seen any of his work yet. It captures a lot of melodrama in the country music capital, and some of the actors play fictional characters while others play themselves. Plus, there are so many awesome musical performances that serve to both enhance the setting and propel the narrative."

"I gotta throw a musical in there, and I’d go with The Band Wagon. Singin’ in the Rain is more exuberant, but [Vincent] Minnelli is one of my favorite stylists in cinema. You know, I love {Fred] Astaire, and I’m crazy about that film. I’ve loved it since I was in high school. Often, these favorites come and go, and they change position on your list, and you make room for other things that maybe you didn’t appreciate as strongly when you were younger, but I’ve always been crazy about that movie."

"Okay. I’m going to Once, which is a little Irish musical made by John Carney. It’s got the best music ever. So many movies look at extraordinary circumstances and it just looks at the most ordinary circumstances. There are no bad guys. There are no dramatic turns. There are no big twists. Nobody dies. Nobody gets sick. It’s just simple. It’s about two people who meet and really start to fall for each other, but it can’t work at that moment, and they pass like ships in the night. It makes me cry."

Ross (3284 KP) rated The Smiths by The Smiths in Music

Rolling Stone's 473rd greatest album of all time
I have been listening to a lot of 80s alternative music recently, having become obsessed with The Cure and Echo and the Bunnymen. My feelings for the Smiths has softened somewhat, moving to musical appreciation and less "I don't like Morrisey's voice", despite his recent apparent racist nationalism. But a few of the songs on this album put this back a step as he is quite insufferable at times. A few of their classics are here but generally overshadowed by him being … him.
