"My family, we only watch scary movies together. We do not watch comedy – anything – we just watch scary movies. The only other times that I have seen scary movies is when I’m watching Netflix in my room. And I think I’ve probably watched The Conjuring 100 times. I’m not exaggerating: I’ve watched The Conjuring a hundred times. I could recite the movie. A lot of scary movies usually just [feature] a bunch of pop-ups, which is pretty scary, but I don’t really think it’s that scary – it catches you off guard and you’re just shocked. But with The Conjuring it’s actually creepy stuff. And they have a lot of things that I have phobias of. It all piles up. It’s not just like, “Ooh that was scary for a second!” It’s like “Oh my God, that’s so scary!” and then it keeps adding on. It’s not a pop-up and then in another 20 minutes it’s going to be another pop-up. It’s: “Why is she still walking towards me? And why is it still getting more intense?”"

Border Control, hmm.
141. Desierto. Nice, random movie on Netflix time and it paid off. It's a short one, but freakin intense man! It's all about a group of Mexicans crossing the border and they meet an American that disagrees with that idea. Its Jeffrey Dean Morgan, who already kinda looks like an asshole, is a real American man, truck, dog, gun, and happens to like murdering people crossing into the states. Meanwhile one of those illegal crossings is happening right now... A group who is crossing the desert on foot because their car breaks down, are pounding across the sand, group gets seperated, one gets ahead...which is good news for the ones way behind, because they get to watch all their travelling companions picked off one by one. The group in the back lead by Gael Garcia Bernal, gets a running, but Morgans dog smells those fuckers out and the race is on. It was really fuckin good, like I said intense and right to the point. I say, watch.

Full disclosure: I'm a fan of both Jamie Foxx and JGL. I was very happy to hear that he was ending his hiatus to return for this film.

Netflix has released a couple of good things in recent memory, but they have also churned out some turds. I had great fears when I heard the synopsis to Project Power because I felt that if they didn't do it right that they would stop investing in the genre, or at least limit their investment.

I had read some pretty lackluster reviews before having a chance to see this for myself, and I'm thrilled that I didn't take those as a reason not to watch it myself. There are definitely some flaws in several different elements of the film, but overall I feel that they did a good job with the premise. Besides, nobody else was beating the door down to make something similar (a la White House Down/Olympus Has Fallen).

Definitely worth having a look for yourself. Interesting concept with some scathing undertones.
