A well written story that pulls you into another world..... literally.

To say the book focuses on and around teenagers it's anything but aimed purely at young folk. If it hadn't have been for references to age I would have spent most of the book thinking I was reading about early twenty-something's.

There's plenty of magic and fraught situations that had me almost holding my breath and wishing that I could perform magic.
I enjoyed journeying with Porter (The Gatekeeper's son/future Gatekeeper) and his cousin Ames. It was nice seeing how each of them grew throughout and gained a better understanding of each other and themselves. Especially learning self belief and trusting their new friends.

A good fantasy that will keep you and your mini mes entertained and enthusiastic for an adventure.

It's hard to know what to write about this book. Set in the first age of Middle Earth, it is part of Tolkien's mythos building alongside The Silmarilian and other works. Indeed, I believe part of this tale does feature in the other tome. I guess the best way of looking at this work is similar to the way theologians look at the Old Testament to the New Testament. Tales passed down as opposed to first hand experiences (Given The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings are 'written' by Bilbo and Frodo, I think this analogy is fitting.) with all the 'What the....' moments you get from reading singer if the Old Testament passages. Is this as good as the classics in Middle Earth, no. But can I see what Tolkien was trying for? Yes!

The final - and incomplete - Hornblower story, set back just before Trafalgar.

And I say incomplete deliberately, as C.S. Forester died before he could complete this work, although he left notes over where it was heading

What we have is, thus, more or less the opening act to the story: Hornblower, heading back to England for a new posting after handing over command of the Hotspur, finds himself engaged in a boarding action against a French vessel and, subsequently, in possession of some very important piece of information that may answer the age-old question of just why Trafalgar was fought when the French and Spanish fleet had no need to at all ...

it's just a pity that Forester never got the chance to finish the story.
