They have been calling this "Water for Elephants meets The Night Circus." Since I've never read either of those books, I could enjoy it for what it is - historical fiction, woman's murder mystery with a touch of magical realism. Authors have always been told “write what you know”, but as far as I can tell, this is a rule that Mr. Burnett has shunned totally. Had it resulted in an unsuccessful novel, that would have been understandable. But amazingly, it doesn’t.
