This was my first of this author's books, and I went in absolutely blind. I chose the book randomly from the library and didn't realize it was a companion to another novel until I started digging into it. The story drew me in instantly and the set up was creative and gave the story an interesting flow. I really enjoyed this one and I plan to go on to read lock in!

I'm ashamed to say it's been years since I read a Michael Crichton novel, but what a way to jump back in! This book was better than I expected, somehow he managed to keep it interesting even though there wasn't a lot of action happening. The pacing was fast, although I thought the main character could have been a little more developed. All in all, this is a book I would definitely recommend.

The writing was good, the book definitely kept me entertained and I enjoyed the characters.
I will say that this novel dealt with a dark subject. This book does contain sexual assault, if you're easily triggered, you may want to evaluate if you can read this.
Normally I would give this book a 3 star but I was impressed with how anti-sexual assault this book was. That alone, earned it an extra star.

Gisell Middleton (189 KP) rated The Last One in Books

This book was magnificent. It's kind of like an adult Hunger Games mixed in with The Walking Dead, World War Z and The Road. No zombies, no vampires, no dystopian future but a very poignant look at human nature and dire circumstances. Although I am a bit tired of the time jumps that plague all current literature, these feel necessary and are almost a relief in cutting the tension at times. Great novel!

This book was disturbing and amazing, like a terrible train wreck you can't look away from! The protagonists are common enough that they seem harmless and boring but at the same time, unbelievably twisted and evil in their lack of morality and compassion. I felt sorry for and repulsed by the narrator almost concurrently while rooting for her redemption and condemnation. It is truly a sensational novel that keeps you interested, engaged and terrified.
As an avid reader of novels I've found myself persistently let down with YA novels and I thought the same of Divergent before I had even read it. I got a sample and downloaded the book and finished it in under ten hours. Couldn't put it down. Very good YA novel and an interesting twist on a dystopia. Don't think I will be judging a book by its cover any time soon again
Crystal (9 KP) rated Fire (The Six Elements, #1) in Books

This is okay as a basic fantasy novel. One thing did bother me towards the beginning in that the main character classifies her and her friends as classes, like assassin, ranger, etc. and even in Dungeons and Dragons books they don't come straight out and name them like that, and it just seemed a little cheesy. Overall the concept is good, but the characters just don't grow nor did I become attached to them.

A grimm fairytale
I haven't been so completely drawn into a book since I read Michael Ende's "Neverending Story" (hell mend you Disney for what you did to that exquisite novel). This is a heartachingly tender story of childhood bereavement and bewilderment. The tale is so skillfully woven I walked every step of the story with the lost and lonely little protagonist.

I received a read and review copy from Netgalley for my full honest opinion.
Overall, this was a great read. Some parts were completely terrible while others were absolutely fantastic. I would only reread parts of this novel as certain stories are better than the others but all in all, it’s a 4 star read.
