Merissa (14013 KP) rated Crush (Unhinged Holidays #3) in Books
Jan 23, 2026
CRUSH is the third novella in the Unhinged Holidays series, featuring Cupid no less! He arrives to help Anabel and Cole break through the man-made barriers and fears that stop them from loving each other. He's only supposed to watch and guide, not participate. That's fine, surely?!
Nope!
Luca is drawn from the very first moment to Anabel and Cole. He is turned on by watching them, even more so when they give him permission to join in. And the three of them together? Hot, hot, hot!
This was a quick, short read that is full of heat, emotion, and connections you hoped for, but never expected. It takes place over one night, so don't expect an in-depth backstory. However, if you're here for a steamy love menage, then you're in the right place.
I will say, this isn't my favourite of the series; that title still belongs with Spice. However, I thoroughly enjoyed every word and definitely recommend it.

Merissa (14013 KP) rated Captured Prey (Second Circle Entry #1) in Books
Jan 27, 2026
CAPTURED PREY is the first novella in the Second Circle Entry series, and the first by this author that I have read. I went in with no expectations apart from the blurb. What I got was a great story.
Celia is a professor, single, and buttoned up. She longs for something she knows she will never get, that is, until she finds the Oubliette. The nightclub looks like it's for the rich and famous, but is so much more. When Asmodeus offers her everything she wants, she is dubious but accepts. And she certainly gives Lahs a run for his money!
I thoroughly enjoyed this story, short as it was. I would have enjoyed it more if it were longer, but that's probably just me being greedy! I loved the connection between Lahs and Celia, with Asmodeus watching from the sidelines. This was a great introduction to this author, and I will certainly be reading more from her. Definitely recommended by me.

ClareR (6230 KP) rated The River Has Roots in Books
Mar 11, 2025
I have deep love for a fairy tale - especially the ones that border on the macabre.
The River Has Roots is a beautiful tale of two sisters who live on the border of Arcadia (Faerie), and sing to the Willow trees twice a day in tribute to the men they once were.
The sisters are very close: Ysabel and Esther, and they always want to be together. But of course, as in all good fairytales, a man throws a spanner in the works.
The River Has Roots is a novella and honestly, if El-Mohtar wrote this as a full length novel or decided to write more such stories, I would be all in. The writing is beautiful - full on fairytale style at its best.
This gave me “The Twa Sisters” vibes, equally as tragic, but not exactly the same - you’re not getting an exact retelling. This is a story in its own right.
The Lino-cut illustrations (Kathleen Neely) throughout the book were perfect for the story, too.
There was a bonus story at the end, “John Hollowback and the Witch”, and it was a rather pleasant surprise - a fabulous cautionary tale.
This is a must-read for my fellow fairytale fans!

Merissa (14013 KP) rated Daddy Marc's Gem (Club Sensations #2) in Books
Apr 4, 2025
DADDY MARC'S GEM is the second novella in the Club Sensations series. Marc is a therapist and a Daddy, but a lonely one as he hasn't found his boy. Foster is an antiques dealer/restorer without a shop, in a place where he doesn't know anyone and was isolated before being dumped.
I loved how these two met and how it grew naturally. Foster has questions and needs answers before deciding - which is fair enough, in my opinion. Foster is also a sweetheart who has been dumped on by too many people and needs the love and affection Marc is more than happy to bestow on him.
Tate's story (Born Daddy) is mentioned during a conversation between Marc and Zane, who also makes an appearance with Ryan while Ty is only mentioned, so you don't need to have read book one to enjoy this one.
A short read but one I thoroughly enjoyed. Hot and spicy in places; loving, tender, and protective in others. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED by me.

Merissa (14013 KP) rated Rough Harmony (Rough Harmony #0.5) in Books
Mar 16, 2026
ROUGH HARMONY is a prequel novella to a series of the same name. It's about an all-male, all-queer, leather-bound, a capella group that is the brainchild of Max and Theo.
You don't get much, but what you do get is enough to intrigue and draw you in, giving enough information on each singer to leave you wanting more. Each man is broken in their own way, searching for something to help them be.
Each chapter is either Max, Theo, or one of the new guys. It is hard not to find it at least a little repetitive when each one has to audition, but it's also hard to avoid. I found it hard to remember names, attitudes, and the little bit of backstory that we did get, but I know with a full-length novel, it will be easier.
A great prequel that has whetted my appetite, and I can't wait for more. A quick but intriguing read that I definitely recommend.

Merissa (14013 KP) rated Jesse's Diner (Hope, #2) in Books
Apr 16, 2023
This is a feel-good, sexy, romance novella in the Hope series. Steve and Tanner have known each other for a long time, and Tanner has had a crush on Steve since the very beginning. When he receives a call from Mike, his best friend and Steve's son, saying that he is worried about his dad, Tanner feels like he has to check in on him to make sure he's okay.
There is a revelation from Steve which has the possibility to destroy their relationship before it even gets started. Instead, I was very impressed with Tanner's reaction and subsequent research/knowledge, whatever you want to call it.
I adored this book - every single word. This is a hug-in-a-book, with some incredibly sensual scenes too. And just in case, the story itself isn't enough, the dedication brought a lump to my throat and tears to my eyes. And there are not many dedications that I can say that about!
Highly recommended!!
