Essentially a horror novel within a fantasy setting, this is set in the same world as Simon Green's earlier novels "Blue Moon Rising" and "Blood and Honour"; albeit about 10 years on from "Blue Moon Rising", with the odd reference to the events of that (better) book.

It's also pretty much rote stuff: there's nothing really outstanding about this book that would make it stand out from the crowd.

Really, in my opinion, these peerlessly eccentric, comparatively short marvels, which are so bafflingly different from each other as well as from everything else, should be considered parts of a whole. Loving is the most visual of them, but each has its own extraordinary qualities."

As promised, my first book review of the New Year is for "Brides in the Sky" by Cary Holliday, which is a collection of mostly historical fiction short stories and a novella.
