“Old fashioned science-fiction styling meets modern day ingenuity in these highly imaginative books – where a young boy spreads the wings of his mind to rebuild the perfect car, house, and school.”

To an almost nine year old who had trouble reading oh so long ago, with the help of my mother, I became so engrossed in reading these books aloud, that I now have everything ever written about Pern. (0 more)
Learned to read with these books
Learning about Pern from Lessa’s point of view was enchanting from a nine year old’s perspective. Over thirty years later, I reread this series over and over again. Both my mother and grandmother had read the series before me and now I’m reading it to my nine year old niece.

"When I was 9 years old, I went to a book fair behind a church in rural New Hampshire. I was allowed to pick out two books. I really wanted the Gary Larson cartoons (the stuff that guy does with woodland creatures!)."

Wright on!
I have now read a few of Iain Rob Wright's books (which I will get round to reviewing soon). The Room Upstairs was the latest read and I have to say that, like all his books so far, it was a rollicking good read. Wright delivers a good balance of horror and dark humour. I have often been reminded of the old tv show Hammer House of Horror whilst reading his books (a good thing for me at least). Recommended reading

A good old fashioned school story
The first book in the Malory Towers series. One of my favorite books as a child and still loved today. It's very much set in the 1940's but it mostly adds to the charm.

While the plot was non-scary and a somewhat fun, it was completely missing the word confussion that was the heart of the old books.

If you can get over the fact that the series does not stay true to the books, you might like it. The series has definitely put it's own spin on the Anne of Green Gables series.
