I did not like Blue!
Independent reviewer for Divine Magazine, I was gifted my copy of this book.

A year ago, Kelly and Blue took the friendship to a whole other level. But Blue plays football, and doesn't wanna come out yet. He just needs to bide his time. Kelly, however, is growing impatient with Blue. Can Blue keep Kelly happy, while he gets himself together?

This is book two in the Rules of Possession duet, and you NEED to read book one, The Blueprint, first.

I listened to book one, and I said that I found that the narrator for Blue didn't quite for me, even though Sean Crisden is a firm favourite of mine. However, since READING book two, I've decided it's NOT the narrator, but Blue himself who is the problem!

I could hear Kelly when I read his chapters, but not so much Blue. I connected better to Kelly than Blue. I loved Kelly, but Blue?? Nah, wanted to punch him so bad!

Keeping Kelly happy is Blue's number one priority, but he still has to work, to play football, and to leave Kelly from time to time and that does rather kill Blue. He DOES love Kelly, that much is obvious, but he just can't come out yet, not to everyone else.

BUT everyone else? Those around Blue and Kelly all the time?? THEY know, they knew BEFORE Kelly and Blue did! When a couple of players voice what they know, and Blue gets caught kissing Kelly on their vacation, he knows he has to come out. And he does.

I just *insert sigh* expected the fall out of that to be . . . MORE . . . you know?? Blue goes on about how big a deal it is, to come out as a football player, about how BAD it will be, and I expected the fall out to be nuclear. But it's more of a damp firework, to be honest!

I DID enjoy reading this, but the thing I struggled the most with was Blue himself. But Kelly's voice is so strong, it balances out Blue perfectly. And the story rounded off beautifully, in a very Kelly way!

Super Dungeon Explore: Forgotten King is the follow up to the hugely successful Super Dungeon Explore (spoiler alert; I wasnt the base games biggest fan). Forgotten Kings has slipped a little more under the radar, possibly due to the hugely controversial kickstarter for the base game, and Soda Pops split from the publisher who helped launch their (and a number of successful KS campaigns), but also likely due to the fact that since the base set came out miniature based board games have gone from being a rarity, to a more mainstream product.

Its here that Forgotten Kings falls to pieces. When SDE launched it was a top end board game, and was excitingly innovative, playing like a fusion of Warhammer-a-likes, Euro board games, and an rpg. With no direct comparison it shone out as something special, but Forgotten Kings has launched into a market surrounded by superior games more tailored to specific gamers.

Want a quick fun mini based game; here's Zombicide, want a complex deep and strategic mini based board game; here's Dark Souls.

And therein lies the issue, Gorgotten King is a mesh of simple things and randomness, and a level of complexity in set up phases that makes you read the rules three times.

The one thing Forgotten Kongs nails perfectly is the miniatures. The models are detailed, cute and fun to paint. If you can pick up a decently priced copy and have a use for then it is almost worth picking up a copy just for them.

Forgotten Kings also has one feature to lift it above the original version; the introduction of Arcade mode. Whilst the normal rules requires one player to sit in a dungeon master style role in Arcade Mode an AI system has been introduced to allow you to solo play, or all play on the same side.

Like the original Forgotten Kings still feels very much like an 8-bit experience on a board, but, like its video game counterparts, the competition has moved on to better things.

If you like your baseball and statistics, if you know your ERA from your RBIs then this is surely going to be a film not to miss. Directed by Bennett Miller the film stars Brad Pitt as Billy Beane the general manager of the Oakland Athletics during the 2002 season in which the club went on a 20 game winning streak.

The theory and reason behind this success was using player stats and computer generated analysis to pick a team of relative nobodies, a practice that is now used by almost every baseball club in the National and American leagues today.

During this monumental season the club achieved 103 total wins doing so on a tiny budget, matching the mighty New York Yankees whose budget was well over $100m. To say that Beane’s method was out there was an understatement, and not everyone agreed, and in some cases they still don’t. The film however is living proof that it did work!

Beane’s sidekick in all of this and one of the only other people backing him was Peter Brand (Hill) the brains, whose ability to value and assess players on their potential to get to first plate and thus increase the likehood of runs was almost invaluable.

So how do you make a film about pure stats an exciting one, there is not enough live action to depend on, although the clubs pivotal game to reach twenty straight wins is pretty amazing when you see how they almost let an elven run lead slip through their fingers.

The acting is solid, Pitt and Hill gel extremely well and Philip Seymour Hoffman ads a gruff dimension as the clubs manager, seemingly having to succumb to Beane and Brand’s mathematical insanity.

You don’t need to be a fan of the game to enjoy this one, its an underdog story from the perspective of the back room and at the end when you see just how much Beane turned down to take the same post at the Boston Red Sox you can really get a feel for just how much it all meant to him.
