Weird
A odd series full of strange characters on vacation at a resort in Hawaii. The cast is impressive and scenery looks great. There just doesn't appear to be any real plot as such. More like a social commentary about people with money. Some funny moments but overall rather dysfunctional.

Grim , brutal and tasteless
I think the gratuitous and horrific descriptions of violence is insulting to those nations who were killed in the American genocide. It is bordering on tasteless and the entire book seems rather pointless being pummelled with endless ways of how to kill people in various brutal fashions. I understand McCarthy may be trying to portray how perpetual violence can desensitise people such as soldiers into doing things morally reprehensible but that was not obvious and it may have been more appropriate to use a fictional situation. The irony is you become desensitised reading it to the point my mind switched off. As a fan of The Road, I was disappointed by this.

'Tender and tragic, set against the turbulent backdrop of wartime Britain'
This is my absolute favourite book, so I'm likely to be biased. The characters feel like real people, and their experiences and thoughts feel as palpable as your own. Let this book sweep you through love and heartbreak, enveloped by war-torn 40s London. The unusual plot layout of this book (moving backwards through time, starting at the end and finishing at the start) may be confusing at the first read, but provides dramatic irony which is integral to the book's brilliance.

This show is incredibly endearing in it's own way. The premise is people who aren't good at baking do some way-out-of-their-league baking. The results are all at once comical and at times impressive.
The show is tacky, but deliberately and very self-aware. That particular attitude is hilarious to me and a big part of what I enjoyed.
The two main hosts, Nicole and Jaques, have very good interplay and we're entertaining. It was especially fun watching Jaques and the guest judges get upset having to watch people flounder through what to them are basic tasks.
Finally, I actually learned quite a bit about baking. I actually wanna give it a try.

Red Otter (340 KP) rated Splendor in Tabletop Games

Splendor is one of my go-to games for introducing new people to the hobby as it revolves around 2 simple actions. Get gems, and buy cards with gems. Easy to teach and people feel good when they manage to link several actions in a row efficiently or when they learn that picking up all of the gems of a colour is a annoying yet hilariously effective strategy at times. It has enough depth to last a while and for someone experienced to consistently beatsomeone who is learning, but eventually you'll want something a bit more complex. In terms of theme, there really isn't any, just gems and Nobles for some reason.
