"Dawoud recently brought a copy of his book to me at my Harlem restaurant, Red Rooster. This look at the neighborhood in the '70s sums up why I love living here. Dawoud is the street photographer who captured the swagger of the people and life exactly as it was lived back then."

"As in all of Yates’s books, the characters are modeled after people in his life, and this book is primarily about his mother. It’s like August: Osage County, if it were set on Long Island in the 1930s. The story may be bleak and hopeless, but Yates’s prose is unpretentious and irresistible."

"We are deep into Shohei Imamura. I always loved Vengeance Is Mine, which was the only one I knew, on a double-disc Criterion laser. But now this box set gives me some perspective. Pigs and Battleships. The war didn’t exactly work wonders for the people of Tokyo or wherever that was."

"One of the first Criterion discs I purchased . . . back when it was laserdisc. I much prefer Bergman’s original five-hour, six-part television version to the U.S. cut . . . both of which are in this DVD set. When people tell me I should get married, I ask, “Have you seen Scenes from a Marriage?”"

"This is an amazing work of art and history—a three-part graphic novel that dives deep into some of the struggle, strategy, beauty, and brutality that defined our country’s Civil Rights Movement. A vital tool for people, young and old, to learn about the past and be inspired about the future."

"This record was revolutionary. Very subtle, very elegant. I do a lot of collaborations now. This record gave me all the answers I needed at that time. I realised that you can work with people and keep your soul. You don't need to change anything. Keep being yourself. Keep defending your truth."
