John Puller is on vacation from his duties as a CID officer for the Army when his father, receives a letter from Betsy Simon. Betsy Simon is Puller's aunt, and was instrumental in his upbringing while his father served as a General in the Army. The letter instantly puts Puller on high alert and he heads to Paradise, FL to check on his aunt. When he arrives, he finds that she has died in her backyard and the local police have written it off as an accident. Puller does not believe this to be true, despite his aunt's ailments and age. Conducting his own investigation, he is determined to find out what happened to his aunt and what is going on in Paradise that had her so rattled.

Another gripping John Puller novel from David Baldacci. Even on vacation, Puller can't escape crime. He thought he would go down to Paradise, FL and just be able to talk to his aunt about what was troubling her in the letter she sent to his father. She did ask for his help in the letter, but Puller never expected she would be killed for it. While investigating his aunt's murder, more people end up dead, friends of his aunts, and people go missing. Things just don't seem to be so great in Paradise after all. With the help of the local police, Puller tries to get to the bottom of what is going on. Are the police in on the disappearances of people? Are they trying to cover up what really happened to his aunt by calling her death an accident?

During this investigation, Puller finds out some disturbing happenings in Paradise. Will the local police accept his help to get to the bottom of it or is this small town in on the whole thing.

The story of three cops Sal, Tango, and Eddie, “Brooklyn’s Finest” depicts a graphic understanding of the challenges faced by hardened policemen. Eddie (Richard Gere) is disgruntled and seven days away from retirement from the police force. Tango (Don Cheadle) is stuck undercover while his real life is breaking apart. Sal (Ethan Hawke) can’t afford to support his growing family. All three of them are about to have a week that will test who they are as cops in the not so clear-cut morals of the Brooklyn police force.

A hard-hitting and graphic film, “Brooklyn’s Finest” shows the complicated life of cops struggling to balance morals and justice. Audiences will find it strongly languaged, visually appalling, and emotionally striking. These cops are not the clean-cut ideals that serve and protect, but rather people who have intensified problems on the mean streets of Brooklyn.

For the three lead actors these roles offer significant stretch, particularly in the case of Gere, who displays a physical and emotional depth in the film that is engrossing. Another worthy performance is that of Wesley Snipes as Caz, a gang leader who has recently returned from prison and is now seeking a path to new better life. With complicated characters like these, the film takes a hold of viewers by examining right and wrong in the world of both cops and criminals.

In short, “Brooklyn’s Finest” is a well-paced gripping story played by strong actors. However, audiences should be warned that the tough subject matter and hardened characters make it a far cry from traditional police dramas. This is a film that is likely to offend those who have strong ties to the ideals of police life or a distinct dislike for violence. For the rest of the movie-going public, “Brooklyn’s Finest” is a well-scripted film that is hard to ignore.

A very good start to a new series and one I am very much looking forward to getting my teeth into.

A gruesome murder has occurred in an isolated farmhouse and DCI Mackenzie 'Mack' Jones and her team are sent in to investigate. Their initial thought is that it's a tragic murder-suicide however, fingers soon point to the person who discovered the bodies of his family, Ralph Mallender and he is quickly arrested, charged and brought to court.

Ralph's wife is convinced of her husband's innocence and employs the services of disgraced ex-police officer and now private detective, Atticus Priest to try and find any evidence missed by the police which will help her husband's case.

Not being tied by the constraints of the police, i.e., the law! Atticus sets about the task at hand and quickly discovers things are not quite what they seem much to the annoyance of 'Mack' who just happens to be his former boss and with whom he has had a previous relationship.

The book is told from both Mack and Atticus' points of view and takes place during the court case which mixes police procedural, Atticus' unconventional methods of investigation and court room thriller. The pace is initially a slow burner as there is a wealth of detail that, at times, seems a little unnecessary but once you get past that, it soon ramps up into a thrilling read with plenty of twists and turns.

Overall, a really enjoyable start to a new series and one I am very much looking forward to following and I must give a thank you to Welbeck Publishing Group and NetGalley for enabling me to read and share my thoughts of The House in the Woods.

The best out of all the police paranormal books.
Unfortunately this has the worst looking cover but you know the saying! This is absolute quality, brilliant written told by no nonsense British coppers made all the more believable as some haven't told anyone before for fear of ridicule and remain anonymous. I am used to situations like these yet I tell you, some of the stories sent the shivers down me. This really is an incredible book for those who have an interest or those who don't believe and want to question what the professional investigators who analyse and witness things for a living have to say about the things that have genuinely happened to them.
