"If you like Nirvana, you should know about her. If you're interested in the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, you should know about her. If you want to know about female singers generally, she's the secret ingredient. If you go back and listen to any of her music, like her bands Bikini Kill or Le Tigre, this is a woman who's smart and political but also funny and clever. She's the Tina Fey of punk rock."

"Published just before he died of AIDS, Wojnarowicz’s memoir is a classic of outlaw literature and political fury. Wojnarowicz — who was a great artist as well as writer — wheels through his wickedly difficult childhood, the deaths of friends and lovers, great sex writing, thoughts about art, screeds against the likes of Jesse Helms, all the while facing down his own imminent demise. It’s sad, funny, angry and transporting, a kaleidoscope on fire."

"An erotic, mature political love story inspired by Pavel’s parents and the Cold War era they endured. I was enthralled throughout, by the sexuality, performances and lush cinematography. For me, it was a welcome return to Fellini’s “8 ½” and “La Dolce Vita.” And Joanna Kulig’s transformation from a manipulative teenage girl making love in the field to a plump, fallen performer with mascara running down her face at the end was breathtaking."

"Even though his music isn’t a huge influence on Vampire Weekend, I’d say Expensive Shit was probably the first African record I listened to a lot. In my early teens, I was into punk rock, and looking at the album cover, it fit in with that aesthetic. I learned the backstory about Fela getting busted for drugs. It was my introduction not only to the music, but also to the political situation."
