Dirty Harry (1971)

Supremely tough cop thriller that helped elevate Clint Eastwood to iconic status. Worthless hippie-scumbag Scorpio commences reign of terror in San Francisco, only laconic police detective Harry Callaghan has the spine to do what must be done in order to stop him.

Probably best not to think too hard about the morality and politics on display: they are at best deeply illiberal and at worst borderline fascist (antihero Harry doesn't give a fig about Scorpio's legal rights, tortures a wounded prisoner for information, etc). The film is playing with a stacked deck, anyway: Scorpio (nice performance from Andy Robinson - it almost ended his career, as he became so closely associated with the role) is an irredeemable monster, the embodiment of every concern respectable folks had about the 60s counterculture. Needless to say Harry (embodying traditional American values) shows no mercy as the story progresses. Story is very well-told, with just enough moments of ambiguity to keep it from being solely a piece of ultra-right-wing wish fulfilment. Essential Clint.

Dans ma peau (2002)
Dans ma peau (2002)
2002 | Drama, Horror
"Dans ma peau" is a film that got me into French cinema (along with Martyrs, but this is a different breed of film). It's both horrific and real. An allegory about the pressure of life, specifically as a woman, protagonist Esther injures her leg at a party and develops a fixation on the wound. She begins to mutilate the wound further, using the pain as a distraction from office politics and a hard decision in her romantic life.

Brief interlude: if you struggle with self harm, do yourself a favor and either avoid this film, or watch when you're in a good frame of mind.

This movie is filmed in an innocuous way. That is to say, it doesn't FEEL like a horror movie. In fact, it's hard to even call it that, despite the horrific content. There are scenes which stretch on to the point where the audience is horribly uncomfortable. But they're also REAL. How many times have you felt inadequate or embarrassed and wished you could disappear? That's what this film embodies.

Warning - not a Thanos-heavy book as described
The builders, a race of beings who created the universe, have decided they want a change and have begun to destroy it and start again. And there are numerous species that decide to try and stop them for obvious reasons. And there are other things with pointy things on their heads and no clothes on and there is Thanos being Thanos and there is sexual tension between Namor and Black Panther and .... just so much going on.
The scope of this story is epic, as you might expect given the recent Infinity Wars part 1. However, it really is not very accessible - there is a lot of gobbledigook and pseudoscience trotted out. And most of the action takes place in space, or inter-planetary politics.
Some parts of this neverending book were excellent, but they were few and far between.
To cut a long story short, I never truly felt like I had much of an idea of what was happening, and only enjoyed the final few issues to any great extent. Some decent artwork.

Yet another fabulous book in the Game series!! I love everything BJ Harvey writes and Abi and Cade's story sucked me in from page one. These two were beyond perfect together and I loved every moment of their journey. Dr. Caden Carsen III has grown up in a family with money, his father in politics and his mother the perfect Stepford Wife... yet he wants none of it and is determined to be his own man. When his parents decide to start stepping in with woman to put on his arm he decides to take matters into his own hands and ask Abi, a one-night stand from 10 months ago, to be his pretend girlfriend.... These two go in expecting so much less and end up with so much more.... This book was a trip to read as both Abi and Cade are such incredible characters and the banter between the two of them is off the charts adorable, not to mention I laughed my a$$ off throughout most of the book!? HIGHLY recommended author, book & series!!!

I heard you paint houses
With an awesome cast featuring Pacino, De Niro, Pesci and directed by Scorsese you get excited about another Mafia film with these guys. Although weighing in at a hefty 3 hours 20 minutes run time you hope it will be entertaining as their other Mafia films. For the first couple of hours it does a good job. It gets a little bogged down in the politics of Union business and competing presidents at times. It shows the Story of the Irishman played by De Niro and how over the years he becomes involved working for the mafia in a few roles. If they left out the final hour I would score it higher. Sadly at this point the film drags quite badly without the extra hour really adding anything to the story. Watch it for the cast if you are a fan but this is no @GoodFellas (1990) or @Casino (1995)

Great romance book (0 more)
Everywhere Katie Brenner looks, someone else is living the life she longs for, particularly her boss, Demeter Farlowe. Demeter is brilliant and creative, lives with her perfect family in a posh townhouse, and wears the coolest clothes. Katie's life, meanwhile, is a daily struggle--from her dismal rental to her oddball flatmates to the tense office politics she's trying to negotiate. No wonder Katie takes refuge in not-quite-true Instagram posts, especially as she's desperate to make her dad proud.

Then, just as she's finding her feet--not to mention a possible new romance--the worst happens. Demeter fires Katie. Shattered but determined to stay positive, Katie retreats to her family's farm in Somerset to help them set up a vacation business. London has never seemed so far away--until Demeter unexpectedly turns up as a guest. Secrets are spilled and relationships rejiggered, and as the stakes for Katie's future get higher, she must question her own assumptions about what makes for a truly meaningful life.
