Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2460 KP) rated The Silencing in Books
Mar 9, 2018
A sobering look at how the illiberal left is using name calling and intimidation to silence those they disagree with. Columnist and Fox News contributor Kirsten Powers chronicles stories from the last few years of this trend to name call, demonize, and shout down those who don’t follow liberal dogma to the letter. She shares stories from college campuses, feminism, and the war on Fox News.
There is little editorializing in the book. Instead, she lays out story after story of how people are being attacked for saying things that aren’t deemed correct. The result is a book that anyone who cares about America should read with their eyes wide open.

Rebecca Hope (5 KP) rated Dominion in Tabletop Games

Dominion
I love playing Dominion. It's a game that I rarely get bored of playing, due to the many expansions that the game has. There's always a new set of cards to use, and they are always used differently depending on who is playing. We always come up with new, exciting ways to combine cards uses and powers and just to pass out curses! Dominion is one of those games that definitely does not get old fast at all. It can go by quickly if played right, and can be extended time-wise if you'd like as well, which is a good point for me. Sometimes I just do not have the energy to sit and play a game for hours on end.
Dana (24 KP) rated JLA, Vol. 7: Tower of Babel in Books

This was an interesting story for the Justice League crew. They are all being targeted and picked off, one by one. The killers are picking things that would hit each of theme where it hurts, knowing how to take them down with one hit. How do they do this? Batman.
This showcases Batman's need to know all of the ways his team mates work, and know how to ruin them. Though he claims it's for the good of the people, I think it's because he is insecure in his own lack of powers surrounded by people who are stronger than him.
All in all, this was an interesting comic and I think I need to read more about the flaws of Batman. If you have any recommendations, let me know!

Awix (3310 KP) rated Superman (1978) in Movies
Feb 20, 2018
The first blockbuster superhero movie is still one of the best, treating its subject matter as one of the great American myths (and quite right too). Benevolent father-figure somewhere in the sky sends his only son to Earth, to do good deeds with his special powers and inspire people by his example (religious subtext is not laboured, thankfully).
Not especially like the Superman comics of the time, but a classy, charming movie all the same, performed by a charismatic and rather eclectic cast. Third-billed Christopher Reeve was instantly type-cast as Superman, but then Superman was also type-cast as Christopher Reeve for many years afterwards. The ending is somewhat confused but the movie's depiction of Superman himself is so very nearly perfect that it earns itself a pass on this.

Awix (3310 KP) rated Big Hero 6 (2014) in Movies

Slightly oddball product of Disney's acquisition of Marvel - this started life as a comic book featuring characters from the X-Men - ends up as a typically witty and accomplished animation. Youthful genius has to form super-team to stop a supervillain from misusing one of his inventions.
Now, obviously if you're a purist, you can find things to complain about here - no mutant powers, no Silver Samurai, the whole thing is set in a science-fantasy future - but for everyone else this is an engaging, well-told story that comes close to matching The Incredibles when it comes to evoking the thrill and invention of classic superhero stories. Witty and imaginative; looks gorgeous; thoroughly enjoyable (though you have to wait until after the credits for the obligatory Stan Lee cameo).

A lot of shit on there
Good waste of time
Facebook is a part of life these days, I've been on there for about 10 years and checking Facebook has become a must multiple times a day for me (more habit than anything else).
However it is such a waste of time. There are far too many ads and rubbish posted.
The powers that be on there are either overzealous or disinterested.
It's also a great way of making yourself miserable by comparing your life to others (which is often massaged to look better than reality)
I don't think I could leave Facebook but sometimes I kinda wish I'd not joined in the first place.

Ross (3284 KP) rated Silver Surfer: Rebith of Thanos in Books
Aug 15, 2019
The origin of the infinity stones
A few half-decent linked Silver Surfer stories accompany "Thanos Quest", where the tyrant gathers together the infinity stones. This story shows that Thanos is actually already powerful, clever and tactical, and has the abilities to plan out and execute his strategy against a range of opponents. This sews the seed for the Infinity Gauntlet story arc, and the notion that Thanos is both obsessed with "Death", and also that he is totally egotistical and won't use his powers if he thinks he can do something with his natural abilities.
While the story was not quite as enjoyable as that in the Infinity War film, it gives a good background for the conflict to follow and has improved my re-reading of Infinity Gauntlet.
