Melanie Caldicott (6 KP) rated A Cupboard Full of Coats in Books

I found this book very powerful and moving. It is a journey of a woman broken from traumatic events in her childhood and how the mysterious, enigmatic Lemon leads her on a journey towards healing and wholeness. This book is stark in its descriptions and joltingly shocking even though the plot holds a fatalistic inevitability.
At the beginning of the book Jinx is a hollow, cold, deeply scarred woman who lives a very isolated life unable to even form a relationship with her young son. She is unable to believe in and receive love from anyone after the emotional betrayal of her mother led to complete devastation in her teens.
Yet, then Lemon walks back into her life and, whilst at his own admission he is no saint, he leads he on a path to exorcise her guilt and discover redemption. Lemon is a fascinating character who has almost angelic qualities at times and his relationship with Jinx is full of mystery and is at times their scenes together are almost like a fable. And yet throughout the mystery the vivid descriptions and very raw, tangible emotions experienced by the two protagonists ground the story firmly within the realms of human experience, taking the reader on a moving journey of empathy and affinity.

Vernon has just moved to a quiet new little town, the type of town where different really stands out like a christmas tree in the desert! Vernon is used to standing out but not this much and its making him feel very uncomfortable especially with the skin hes in.
oh my this is one of the most gorgeous stories ive read! my heart well and truely went out to Vernon/Violet and the internal struggles their dealing with. with the self harming section i felt like somebody had stepped into my head and put my fellings on paper, when i was alot younger i used to cut because i felt like it released what i couldnt say. I felt every raw emotion going, the doubt the fear the hope the love and the warmth from finally being able to find her true being.
Its nice to be able to have a bit of an understanding of the internal struggle a transgender can go through and how much pain they can deal with and the importance of having a good support network.
i wish there were more understanding and willingness to learn in this world
An absolutly gorgeous story, heartbreaking and heartwarming all at the same time 4/5

"𝘠𝘰𝘶 𝘤𝘢𝘯'𝘵 𝘴𝘦𝘦, 𝘤𝘢𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶?"
"𝘞𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘵𝘰 𝘴𝘦𝘦?"
Easily the best musical which features a song number smack-dab in the middle of a murder trial. I really wish the last 40 or so minutes (minus the jaw-dropping ending) didn't veer so hard into - truthfully - pretty manipulative and rudimentary melodrama because the rest of this is one of very greatest musical experiences I've ever seen. A hallucinatory crossroads between visionary musical theater and downright grim drama. The behind-the-scenes hell that took place all aside, the entrancing performance that Björk gives in this is one of the most seminal of the entire millennium. So full of traumatizing characterizations, haunting and experimental musical numbers (not a single bad song to be found), largely genius storytelling, and a mercilessly abusive milieu that it had me shaking and out of breath before the first hour even passed. The way my heart pounded during this is unreal, one of those films where you just *know* something horrible is going to happen just around the corner but you never know when it'll hit - but when it does it's like a ton of bricks being dropped, rinse and repeat. Raw, innovating filmmaking at some of its most unforgettable.
