Merissa (13854 KP) rated Leveling The Field (KTS #3) in Books
Jun 14, 2021 (Updated Jul 18, 2023)
LEVELING THE FIELD is the third book in the KTS series, and once again, I am recommending you read it as part of a series, rather than a standalone, as there is an overall story arc you will need to follow.
Jesse is strong and confident until it comes down to herself and then those nasty, niggling doubts surface. She longs for the fantasy of having someone love her for her, but the one she wants only sees her as a friend. Leo IS Jesse's friend but she is so much more than that to him. He feels he is not good enough for her! I loved Hannah and Lily's solution to this!
Oh, man! What a story! I loved the arc and where it is going. My heart was in my mouth for the teams when they were in a pickle š I really want to know just who is behind everything and see them get their just desserts. What I love about Ms Faber's writing style though is that you get pulled into the technicalities, the big bad, whilst still being so invested in the love story being played out before you. Neither side suffers as the story continues, making it perfect.
The pacing is perfect, the romance delightful, and the steamy moments are HOT. All in all, this was a brilliant read that I highly recommend. Now I'm impatient for Hannah and Lily's story.

Merissa (13854 KP) rated Stronger Than Longing (Chesapeake Days #3) in Books
Oct 31, 2022
Scorching hot and full of emotions - I'm not ready to say goodbye!
STRONGER THAN LONGING is the third and final book in the Chesapeake Days series and features Nico's brother, Taran, as one of our main characters. It starts with him being dumped for being too geeky and too boring. Along comes Silas, newly back in town, to help revive his flagging... confidence.
Both Silas and Taran have their issues to deal with which, in turn, affects how they deal with each other. There was going to be a blow-up at some point, I knew that, it was just a matter of when. In the meantime, until that happened, I got an eyeful of tentative longing, sarcastic wit, and geeky flirting, and I loved every minute of it. These two are H.O.T. both in and out of the sheets.
As always, Ms McIntyre's characters are lifelike and loveable. The situations are not far-fetched, and love wins the day. This makes my hopeless romantic heart happy.
I have loved the Chesapeake Days series and was inconsolable (as I just wasn't ready to let it go) until I read that there will be a spin-off series called Chesapeake Nights. That put the smile back on my face so now I just have to wait patiently!
A brilliant addition to the series that I highly recommend. But read the others first - not because you have to but because you'll miss out on two other fantastic stories if you don't!

Merissa (13854 KP) rated The Night Blade (Indulgence #2) by Erin Kellison in Books
May 26, 2022 (Updated Jun 13, 2023)
THE NIGHT BLADE is the second book in the Indulgence series. We return to Terah and Adom as they begin their rescue mission of Maxan, Terah's nephew who is being held captive in Phemera. The people, Hood, and goddess are all on the search for Terah, who insulted Phemera by accident in book one. The goddess of Light and Truth is not prepared to accept the apology but will wait, as she knows Terah is on her way to her.
This book is one adventure after another!!! I loved every word, completely caught up in the story. If Terah is the one who grew and changed in the last book, then it is Adom's turn in this one. He is unable to hide from the Truth and faces some uncomfortable facts about himself as he slowly becomes more Adom than Adomanei.
Told from multiple perspectives, you catch up with all the main players from book one, with more to meet too. It is intricate and twisting from one port of call to another. Just as you get an answer to one question, you will then have three more queries.
This does end on a cliffhanger and it about killed me. The build-up to the climax is breathtaking and I read faster and faster to keep up with the pace on the pages. This will be a series that, once it is complete, I will re-read - just so I can go from start to finish without having to wait! Absolutely brilliant and highly recommended by me.
Now, I just have to wait for book three!

Beneath the Stands ( Sugarlake 2)
My Emily McIntire
āļøāļøāļø
Elliot Carson left Sugarlake and has never looked back. Revered as the next big thing in basketball, Eliās a star until an injury ends his career, sending him spiraling with no direction.
But he wonāt go home.
He canāt.
Instead, he accepts a coaching gig at Florida Coast University, determined to leave his past behind. But fate has other plans when Becca, his sisterās best friend, shows up as a student and, even worse, becomes the new team manager.
Rebecca Sanger is the preacherās daughter and the town's disappointment. When she ignores her familyās demands to come home, sheās cut off and needs a job so she can stay enrolled at FCU. She thought she had everything figured out, until Eli Carsonāthe person she hates more than anything in the worldāends up being her new boss.
Forced together, Becca and Eliās hatred turns to heat, and they start an affair. But disaster quickly strikes, ripping them apart.
Years pass, and Beccaās back home, under her parentās thumb, and living a mundane life. When Eli shows up out of the blue with a fiancĆ©e in tow, Becca is tasked with planning their wedding.
Thereās only one problem.
Becca still loves Eli.
And he hates her.
A pretty decent read especially as lately Iāve struggled with romance. It was interlinked with book one so if you havenāt read it you will need to. It was good seeing conclusion to one story as well as it leading to the next. Flowed well and was a nice hit of that spice. Itās good to read a bit of spicy romance now and again.

a perfect follow up to book one!
Independent reviewer for Archaeolibrarian, I was gifted my copy of this book.
This is book 2 in the Pleasure Seekers series, but it can be read as a stand alone book. I loved book one, Thrill, and would strongly recommend it but it's not necessary, you know?
I loved Eddie and Scott in book one, and I was looking forward to getting to know them better, because I was fairly certain they are putting on a face for the world. But I discovered, not so much for Eddie. He's very laid back, until he lays eyes on Billy, then all bets are off!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book, but I didn't love it, and I don't know why and my book brain hates that I cannot voice why!
I liked Eddie and Billy, separately and apart. We got a lot of Billy's family here, raising his teenage sister and reconnecting with his older brother but we don't get much about Eddie's. I kinda missed that.
There is powerful and immediate attraction for these two and it burns hot and bright through the whole book. That is, until Billy finds out what Eddie did and then, all bets are off again!
Tyler is still living with Eddie and Scott and as such, Tyler and Danny, along with Scott play a large part here. I liked that we got to catch up with them.
Not an especially emotional read, but sometimes, that's just what you need.
Scott is next. Now Scott, I know, is putting on a face, and the poor man has a case of envy, given that his two flatmates are now loved up and I look forward to getting his story!
As I said, I liked this book, just couldn't quite love it though, like book one, (sorry!)
4 very VERY good stars

Robin has just started a new job and is about to release her first book. RIght now, is seems as if life couldn't get any better for her. When a series of strange events begins to happen, Robin has to figure out exactly who is trying to sabotage her career. There are a few people it could be and right now Robin isn't sure who she can trust.
This book held my attention from start to finish. It was hard to put down. The book had a little bit of everything in it. A little thriller, a little romance, some conspiracy and murder. All throughout the book, you think you know who is going to be the one doing all of the dirty work. There seems to be so many suspects. Is it the handsome co-host? The ambitious intern who is desperately trying her best? The veteran at the station who will stop at nothing to stay on top and relevant? The associate producer whose story ideas always seem to fall a little short.
I could not put this book down. I had to know what was going to happen. I stayed on the edge of my seat. There was even one part where I shouted, "Holy Shit!" out loud. Luckily, I wasn't any place public when that happened.
This was a great book. One of the best that I have read this year. I look forward to reading more from this author.

Merissa (13854 KP) rated The Songstress (Records of the Three Realms #1) in Books
Apr 5, 2020
The Songstress is the first book in the Records of the Three Realms series and the reader travels to a bygone age very similar in nature to China or Japan. It starts in a tearoom where Kari is trying to protect the young girl she sees as a sister from being taken as part of the Emperor's harem. Kari ends up going too and has to learn how to bend but not break as things are thrown at her that she had absolutely no comprehension about.
This is a rich and intricate tale, woven with skill, to make each scene come alive. Each word is used to the best of it's capability. The world-building is outstanding and the characters help to bring this world to life. Although this is a long book, it doesn't feel that way, as I found myself fully invested in the characters and what was happening to them now.
This is book one in a series so don't expect everything to be tied up neatly. It does finish nicely... for now, although if you are like me, you will definitely want the second book as soon as it becomes available.
This was a fantastic read that I thoroughly enjoyed and was engrossed in from start to finish. With a hint of magic all the way through, this is a book to be savoured. Absolutely recommended by me.

I read the original trilogy with Nevada and Connor "Mad Dog" Rogan a few years ago now but I loved it, so the chance to continue the series with the two younger sisters was a big YES!
It's been three years since Nevada and Connor got married in Diamond Fire and now Catalina is the head of House Baylor. She gets a visit from Augustine - who runs a large PI type firm - and is asked to help talk a fifteen year old down from a hospital ledge after the death of his mum and sister and she immediately agrees. What follows draws Catalina into helping her friend find out who killed their family and she finds her teenage crush, Alessandro, is somehow involved in it.
I really enjoyed this, as I have the previous books in this series. The action barely stops throughout, there's always something happening keeping you hooked.
It was a complicated web for the team to unravel with trying to find out the murderer of Runa and Ragnar's mum and sister and I was drawn into that mystery.
And then the romance. God, I don't know who to slap first. Catalina for not telling Alessandro how she felt, or Alessandro for leaving in the end, though we very clearly see in that epilogue that he doesn't particularly want to leave.
I cannot wait for Emerald Blaze to released in August so I can see these two meet again and hopefully work it out!

Haley Mathiot (9 KP) rated Along for the Ride in Books
Apr 27, 2018
Sarah Dessen caught me by the cover: Iām a bike rider. So I approached this book with eagerness, and it paid. The story was compelling, as Dessenās novels always are, and they force you to read just one more chapter. I got to the end of the book, and wished there were more chapters. I re-read the last chapter a few times, just because it was so perfect. So so perfect. It solved all the problems in the book, didnāt leave you hanging, and made you smile and whisper to yourself āyes.ā
Sheās academically focused to the point that she runs to her studies when sheās afraid of choices, sheās developed a sleeping disorder from her parentās fights before they divorced, and now sheās visiting her dad and his new wife and newborn baby for the summer, simply for lack of anything else to do. But Auden is named after a poet that nobody knows about, has forgotten how to ride a bike, and made a bad first impression with her new co-workers. She meets a quiet boy named Eli with too many secrets and all the right answers. She missed prom because her date was just like herāto school-centered to care about having fun in life. She never had a food fight, she never broke curfew, and sheās never been to a bar (āitās a rite of passage!ā). Eli is astonished that anyone could get through the first eighteen years of their life without going bowling at least once, and sets out to help her experience everything she missed. But now that she has the answers to the things she missed in life, and can see the next step and the decisions she has to make, she has to choose to āget back on that bike,ā even when she falls down.
The characters in this story were so relatable. I understood exactly how Auden felt (even though I did build a tree-house in third grade) and could feel her confusion in this strange new social world of hers, the surprise of showing up at work one day and discovering āhey, whoa. How did this happen? I have friends now!ā I was blown away when I found out Eliās mysteries, and loved Maggie even more when she showed her true colors. All characters have their fatal flaws, and these ones do too, but it makes them real people, not just fairy-tales. Her father was a selfish jerk, but he had his commitmentsāhe just needed to prioritize his family over his novel. Her mother was a hard shellābut she could learn to talk about her feelings, and open up. Leah looked like a snob until you got to know her. And Eli⦠well, Iāll let you discover Eli the way you need to discover himā¦
I will probably buy this book when it shows up at my little used book store (because Iām too broke to buy it full price) and put it on my bookshelf with my name in the cover, and read it again, and again, and again⦠because I truly loved it. Thank you, Sarah Dessen, for writing good YA fiction.
