Dystopian Britain
Set in the near future, Britain has become a one party, military controlled state, where reading the wrong book could mean that you are ‘disappeared’.

The Authorisation Bureau we’re responsible for the disappearance of Clara’s father, a university English lecturer, and she is determined to pick up where he left off. Along with her History professor boyfriend, they decide to teach a select group of students about the past and the books that they are now forbidden to read. But things do not go as planned. Clara has some protection, as her stepfather is a ‘high up’ interrogator with the Authorisation Bureau, but this can only go so far to protect her.

I thoroughly enjoyed this dark tale of an alternate UK. It was rather violent in places, but it’s message was ultimately that of hope. My only complaint (which isn’t really a complaint) is that we could have done with more from the resistance organisation, Lumiere. I would have loved to have read more about them.

Many thanks to The Pigeonhole for serialising this book, and to the author, Amy Lord, for reading along and answering questions.

Powerful Destiny by Tricia McGill
Powerful Destiny is a two-tone story - the first half is set in 850ad, and the second in contemporary times. Both feature a man called Rolf, and a woman called Brigid, and tell you how the two of them meet, both in ancient times and now.

Three quarters of the book is set in 850ad, with only a small part being in current times. This is partly what brought down my star rating from a four to a three. The contemporary side of it felt very rushed, compared to the first part. And the conversations between modern Rolf and Brigid seemed quite stilted at times. I found the premise of the book to be fascinating, and would love to read more about Rolf and Brigid. I just think I'm best to stay in 850ad with them.

If you like books about reincarnation and soulmates, then I can still most definitely recommend this one.

Photographic Heart (Itayu Lake #8) by A.M. Halford
Photographic Heart is the eighth book in the Itáyu Lake series, and we have Brannon's story. He is the nephew of the two angelic aunts who have featured in previous books. He has had his vision and knows he will meet his mate soon, and a rough idea of where, hence why he is back at Itáyu Lake. Kyle has been sent to the Lake by a friend, who knows his friend will love the scenery there.

This was a well told story, making it an excellent addition to the series. This Lake is so well known by now, the author is able to concentrate on the connections between the mates, and everyone else who lives there. With lighthearted moments as well as heartbreaking ones, this book has something for everyone.

I would recommend reading this series from the start, just so you know who is with who! A great read, and recommended by me.

Quick read
I received this in December 2018 Fairyloot box.

In this novel, we meet Sky. Sky and her family are wyverns, who mix with humans but also have their own schools etc. In order to impress and go anywhere int he world or BE anyone of status, you need to be able to steal gold. At the beginning of the novel, Sky's mother has gone.nissing following a failed heist, presumed dead by everyone but Sky, get father and brothers. The family have been shunned from the community as a result, and Sky's now ex-boyfriend publicly humiliated her by dumping her and making everyone aware of his thoughts.

But Sky doesn't care about that. Well she does, but she just wants her mother back.

I was pleasantly surprised by this, as the first 50 or so pages felt very "meh" nd I was debating DNF'ing it. In a way, I'm pleased I didn't, as there was such a quick change of events and pacing in the book around chapter 16 (not sure of page number) that kept me hooked until the bitter end.

Definitely something to read if you like dragons, gold and quick reads.

Miss Frost Ices The Imp ( Jayne Frost book 2)

Jayne Frost is a lot of things. Winter elf, Jack Frost’s daughter, Santa Claus’s niece, heir to the Winter Throne and now…private investigator. Sort of.
When she buys a sealed box at an estate sale and cat-related circumstances cause that box to be opened, life in Nocturne Falls starts to go haywire. Jayne has no choice but to figure out what she unleashed and how to recapture it.
But Jayne suspects the woman behind the box is hiding something. Something that could cause a town resident serious trouble. Or worse, to lose their life.
With the help of her two favorite guys, a sexy vampire and a hot summer elf, and a few new friends, Jayne tackles what feels like an impossible mission. And winds up almost iced herself.

I’m really enjoying this series! It’s supernatural quirky and fun! A sugar loving princess fairy solving town mysteries while holding down the family business and will supernatural boyfriends! It’s just a fun light read.

Anyone that knows me, knows that I love a good retelling. And this is definitely a good retelling. The story is not dissimilar to the original; and I'm talking original Hans Christian Andersen, not Disney. Where this was happening in time was not clear but I read it as quite modern, rather than the age of horse and carriage. I really liked the back story of the little mermaid's mother and the intertwining back story of the "Prince's" father. I say "Prince" but in reality he is a rich young man due to a boating company. Like many retellings of The Little Mermaid the sea witch has a back story which takes away the perception of malice, but of a merperson wrongly outcasted and trying to help while keeping within the rules and bounds of magic. I found the different groups of merpeople really interesting, especially the creatures that now spend their days punishing men due to how they have been treated by men in their former life - a kind of revenge.
For people who like the original story and would like a slightly updated version, this is definitely the read for you!

The Paranormal world finally became known to the 'normal' world 30 plus years previously and now humans and 'others' mingle. This is apparent as this story starts, with a wedding. The guests include both 'other' and human, in this case, Abigail who is human and is there because she has made friends with the bride and groom through her cake shop.

Gerrod is the Mastyr Vampire in charge of that part of the realm. He feels a great responsibility to the people in his care and therefore doesn't spend much time smiling or laughing. Abigail sees how much pressure he is under and wants to help. This sets off a chain of events that leads to a decision that Abigail needs to make.

There is a lot of information in this novella but it is easily absorbed and thoroughly enjoyable. This is the start of a series that I can't wait to read more of.

MY MASKED SAVIOR is the second novella in the Beautiful Stalkers series. This time, it's Damien's turn. He is the medic-turned-EMT who helps Morgan when she has a bronchospasm at the Christmas party. From that moment on, he's obsessed with her, an obsession that only deepens when he realises she was abused by her ex-partner.

Damien is just as possessive as Killian, but he doesn't see it as anything other than being protective. Luckily for him, Morgan is more than happy to have a protector, especially the man she's been unable to stop thinking about.

This is fast-paced and dark, with plenty of steam. Morgan is the right partner for Damien, and I loved how they interacted with each other and everyone else. This was a great second read in the series, and now I'm desperately wanting Ethan and Caleb's stories. I already know who they're partnered with, so I just need to patiently wait for more steamy shenanigans.

A quick hot read and definitely recommended by me.
