Set in bleak Victorian London, the novel follows the life of Mr. Verloc, a secret agent, who also is a married businessman on the side selling inappropriate bric-a-brac. His friends are a group of anarchists of which three people are most prominent. Although largely ineffectual as terrorists, they are well known to the police. Verloc is also secretly employed by the Embassy as an agent provocateur. And here it all falls apart.
The more intriguing part of the book surrounds the family, especially his wife Winnie who essentially behaves like a timid matriarch before becoming distraught over the thought of being hanged. Stevie, Winnie's brother who has a mental disability, is treated more like a son than a sibling. And when he encounters tragedy, Winnie changes into a completely different person.
At times, the political aspect can be long-winded, but it ends in a major climax so it's worth getting to the end.
It started off a little unsure, but this could have been down to me getting used to the style of writing and language style used to represent the characters and gods. However it soon picks up and really draws you in. It's an epic tale spanning so many different aspects of Greek gods and mythology. I could barely believe so many mythological tales had been spun into this, and not only that but done brilliant well. It's such a comprehensive and intriguing tale of the goddess Circe, who is a well rounded and feisty female protagonist. I really struggled to put this book down, and my only disappointment is that it took so long to read, and that it ended too of course. I could have quite happily read on about many more tales of Greek gods and mythology woven into Circe's life.
For me this book was pure escapism. Well written and highly captivating, diving into a book about gods and goddesses is a fantastic way to escape the dreary realities of real life.

Miriam and Mark are from two different worlds, but their friendship, and the sparks that fly between them, is powerful. The bustle of watching Mark come to terms with his feelings for not just Miriam, but the Amish way of life was fun and captivating. I was cheering him on throughout the story, and loved watching God work on his heart within the book. Miriam's feelings and thoughts were heart gripping and I loved watching her with Mark.
If you want a book that is 4 star worthy and filled with simplicity and characters that become real, then this start to a refreshing new series by a truly talented novelist, then this is for you. You'll be swept away to a place where planting the seeds of hope can leave you renewed in spirit and in life. Well done, Ms. Carmeron!
