Hazel (2934 KP) rated Terminal (Major Crimes Unit #4) in Books
Aug 29, 2021
Once again, Iain provides a fast-paced and thrilling read starring Sarah Strong and her colleagues at the Major Crimes Unit. From the first page to the last, this book had me absolutely hooked and I fair whizzed through it.
Full of excellent characters, a storyline that is not beyond the realms of reality (scarily so!) and written at a pace that fair trots along, this is a story well written and exciting and one that I would definitely recommend. Although you don't have to have read the others in the series, you won't be disappointed if you do but it does work as a standalone quite well.
I would definitely recommend to others who enjoy getting engrossed in the world of major crimes.

This book had me hooked and I read it in super quick time. It is full of thoroughly unlikeable characters where few had any redeeming qualities and I have to admit that I actually smiled when at least one of them came to their sticky end!
The story is written from various points of view and whilst this puts you right into the heads of the characters, it does take away some of the tension and thrills but it was fun being in the heads of people who had clearly lost the plot!
This was a fun and over the top read that I would recommend to those who are able to put reality and plausibility aside for a few hours and just hop on and enjoy the ride.
My thanks go to Penguin Michael Joseph UK and NetGalley for my copy in return for an honest, unbiased and unedited review.

I used to be a weird kid, but I keep thinking about ten-year-olds these days watching this Fast and Furious shit that can't watch anything good. Dark times.
David McK (3649 KP) rated John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum (2019) in Movies

And that is pretty much what this film is about, picking up almost directly after Chapter 2 and with Keanu's super assassin John Wick now with a 14 million USD price on his head after killing a man on company (sacred) ground - i.e. The Continental Hotel - in the previous instalment.
I'm still a little hazy on the society itself - just how much are those hitman tokens worth? They constantly seem to change value! - and on why the world and its neighbour seems to be some sort of assassin, leading me almost to wonder are we in some sort of Matrix reality (not helped by Keanu even saying he needs 'Guns. Lots of guns'), but - putting that aside - this is still quite an enjoyable, albeit very violent, action movie.

David McK (3649 KP) rated The Rise and Fall of the Dinosaurs: A New History of a Lost World in Books

I have to say, I'm glad I didn't pay full price for it.
I mean no disrespect, but I did find this quite hard to get through, and really not at all what I was expecting from the blurb/description on the link I followed to purchase it - I'm not sure why, but it just didn't gel with me.
Oh, some of the bits actually *about* the dinosaurs were interesting enough, but I did - generally - find them to be wheat amongst the chaff, rather than the 'main course' (which, I felt, was more about the contemporary exploits of the author).
Oh, there's no doubt he knows his stuff; maybe this was simply a case where expectation did not meet reality and maybe, if I had known pre-purchase that this was more about the state of palaeontology today than about the age of the dinosaurs my view may have been different?
Anyway, it's read cover to cover now. Doubt it is one I will be heading back to anytime soon.
