"I can't say this about every song on this list, but with this one I was quite aware of what the band were doing when it came out. I wouldn't say Public Enemy are my favourite band, but it's pretty close, and when this record was released, they were the most important group in the world as far as I was concerned. ""They were the most interesting, the most intelligent, and at the time, nobody was more controversial than Chuck D. They were so original; they were breaking new ground with every recording. Before It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back, there just wan't music like this. ""That record came out six months before Fear of a Black Planet, and it still felt so sharply of its time because Chuck was talking about everything he'd gone through in the months leading up to it - the controversy with Professor Griff, and everything else. Later on, he said something like, ""Public Enemy is CNN for black people,"" and you get that with this song. It's totally brutal, totally brilliant, and totally of the moment. In the winter of 1990, they just meant everything. ""I've put this one on plenty of mixtapes. Plus, is that a Frankie Goes to Hollywood reference in the title? It's got to be, right?"

"This is when I first started taking my bass seriously. This was this was a when I got hungry to understand what it meant to play bass. I thank God that there was a Stanley Clarke as a frame of reference to what to what is possible with the bass, along with Jaco [Pastorious] and Marcus Miller. There was a period where I stopped liking the practice, I was like 'uh I don't wanna practice', and my mom was really clever about it. She offered to pay me to transcribe Stanley Clarke's School Days. And of course, I'm like, 'I want to buy comic books and Marvel cards', so of course I transcribed School Days. Journey to Love and School Days became really personal to me. It was just like, I felt like this was my n**, and I felt like this was who I am; I identified with those two albums. I didn't even discover the self-titled album until later in life; I was very much married to School Days and Journey to Love. I think that Journey to Love is still very much a story to me that I feel resonates in my mind and body. I don't know what you would call it musically, but I paraphrased the album on my very first album, sonically."

Okay, so not long after I posted my review of HOUSE OF M, I wanted to jump right into AVENGERS: DISASSEMBLED. I know there is a lot of haters in regard to this, and even with that knowledge, I still wanted to give it a go, especially considering how much I enjoyed my re-reading of HOUSE OF M. Man, I wish I had gone with gut instinct instead of trying to be more liberal towards comics I had previously avoided!

It's hard to believe this was written before HOUSE OF M! This is like Bendis at his worst! None of the characters are written well! Tony Stark's a ridin' the "Immma Asshole Express", while Clint Barton (Hawkeye) was written like a misogynistic asshat! And that storyline? TERRIBLE! It was like an 'Afterschool Special' (D'oh! Showin' my age with that reference!) about nihilism!

And as bad as the writing and dialogue, the art varied. Look, I love me some David Finch, but here, hmmm, not so much! The male characters seemed okay enough, but dear God, I felt like most of the female characters were drawn more like fanboy commissions rather than the actual characters!

Here's the bottom line: it sucked! Skip it! You can read HOUSE OF M without needing this dumpster fire! Jus' sayin..
