This book does a great job of introducing us to oyster farming without slowing down the mystery itself. I learned quite a bit while also getting the foundation for the plot. The pace does build as Julia gets closer to figuring things out, and the climax wraps everything up for us perfectly. This series is often on the slim side, and this is no exception. While the suspects are strong and the mystery complex, the supporting players aren’t as prevalent as they might be. While I did miss them and wouldn’t have minded a sub-plot that could have included them, it’s a minor issue. The book leaves us with five recipes that seafood lovers will want to try. As always, this book left me anxious to find out what will happen to Julia next. Fans won’t be disappointed.

This is very different from my normal cozy reads, both in the inclusion of language and violence, but also because Van is really an anti-hero. This is the most he’s slipped into that role, however, and knowing him from the previous two books helped me still root for him. It really helps that I do like him and the other regular characters and I want to see them succeed. While a few of the events of the book are expected, there were still some twists I wasn’t expecting along the way, and I loved the creativity of some of the locations Van used over the course of the book in his attempts to defeat the villains and come out on top. This is a fun, fasted paced thriller that will keep you turning pages.

Jon is the reporter who loses his job because he is losing his memories. The only thing he can - and wants to - remember is the Midnight Rodeo. He follows them from town to town, never knowing why, but unable to resist the call. Kelly tried to do a mindswipe on Jon, before he realised Jon was psychic. This is what has led to the memory loss. Kelly takes Jon under his wing as they try to find a solution.
This is a fast-paced novella with plenty of detail, and a great cast of characters. The story moves along at a steady pace, focusing on this story alone. That is why I feel I have missed out on some details, because some of the other characters obviously have their own abilities and stories, and I wanted to know more.
A sweet and warm story though, that I thoroughly enjoyed, and have no hesitation in recommending.
