Wonder Woman (2017)
Wonder Woman (2017)
2017 | Action, Fantasy, War
The casting of Gal Gadot (1 more)
The correct spirit and mood for the film/character
Another CGI generic villain (0 more)
Finally seeing Wonder Woman for the first time, I am torn between joining the film's praise bandwagon and complaining about another stupid villain. While I certainly don't want to go back to the cheesy Bane, Poisin Ivy, Mr. Freeze days of old, I also am not a big fan of the generic CGI villain, in this case Ares, God of War. I would think they could come up with a happy medium using The Dark Knight as a basis for a complex, grounded human character.

As for Wonder Woman herself, I thought Gal Gadot was amazing in personality, spirit, and the physical embodiment of Wonder Woman as a modern, yet retro female superhero.

Unfortunately, the film's historical setting and perspective has already been done better in the first Captain America film, but had to be the way they did it to make it close to the comic book origin of the character. The scene where Wonder Woman emerges on the battlefield was very strong as you, the viewer, had been anticipating this moment throughout the first half of the film.

The use of CGI during some of the fight scenes with the Nazi soldiers was poor and looked very false. Even when she jumped great distances, I thought that looked fake and was more believable in a Hulk film or even the Wonder Woman TV series from the 1970s.

I also sorely missed an appearance by the original Wonder Woman, Lynda Carter. They have said they will have her in the next film. They had better. 😊

Overall, I enjoyed the film more than most recent superhero flicks, but in 10 years, won't all these films just start to run together?

Tempest 4000
Tempest 4000
Shooter
Back in the 80s when the arcade was king; Tempest was one of the more popular arcade games of the era. Anyone who turned their allowance or paychecks into quarters remembers the furious spinning and shooting combinations of the classic Atari game.

Tempest 4000 is the latest version of the classic game which blends new and retro graphics to

Create an updated version of the game. Playing the classic Claw, players must navigate various webs and fields to destroy and evade enemies which emerge from the center of the playing area and shoot and advance on the player. Players also will have a limited amount of Smart Bombs to use which destroy all in site which is a big help when enemies make their way to the edge of the playing area and start advancing their way to take out the players.

The game has some great new maps and colors and the action is fast paced and insane but will seem very familiar for fans of the original.

Playing on a PS4 Pro did have a bit of a learning curve as the control stick is not as ideal to circle a map as the disc of the original as I often found myself going too far or not far enough at first.

The gameplay is fast and intense but did seem repetitive after a while. No matter how many new maps, colors, and enemies it throws at you, it still comes down to how fast you can spin and shoot.

Tempest 4000 is a pleasant enough distraction for those looking for some updated nostalgia and a few hours of fun gameplay.

Gunjack
Gunjack
Shooter
If you are a fan of the EVE Universe and the Playstation VR, then you will want to check out Gunjack by CCP Games. The game cast players as a gunner on an orbital platform which must help ward off never ending waves of enemies.

Once strapped into your chair, the V.R. experience gives you lots of eye candy as you see the inner workings of the station and move into position.

Mixing old and new, the game sends enemies at players in waves, and using your head to aim, players can unleash a fury of energy and ballistic weapons upon enemies that appear.

Of course you have to be selective with your shots as there is a cool down phase and you do not want to be caught when one of the bigger enemies appear.

Players will also be able to obtain powerful one shot weapons during combat as well as debris which can be used to provide players with additional protection against attacks.

The waves of enemies increase in difficulty which forces players to alter their strategy in order to get the best results. The game is available for all VR platforms and those wishing to play it on the go are able to as well on the Android platform with supporting hardware. The value price is also a big plus for the game as well.

Some gamers may cite a lack of depth to the game but it is important to note that the game was built from the ground up for VR. It was designed to be a fun and affordable VR game which combines the retro shooters of old with the modern VR technology. From the solid action to great graphics, Gunjack is a welcome mix of nostalgia and action and is well worth a look.

Shutter Island (2010)
Shutter Island (2010)
2010 | Action, Drama, Mystery
The mysterious disappearance of a patient has left the security of Aschecliffe Mental Facility baffled. In an effort to figure out exactly what occurred, they have brought in US Marshalls Teddy Daniels (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Chuck Aule (Mark Ruffalo). But when a number of questionable situations are uncovered, such as the restricted castle where they keep the most violent patients and the mysterious muchrumored about lighthouse, Teddy ends up investigating more than he bargained for.

This Martin Scorsese adaption of “Shutter Island” takes viewers on a visual retelling of the popular 2003 novel authored by Dennis Lehane. It is a film that takes you straight into the detective scene of the 1950’s with a mystery that is both complex and has a compelling plot.

“Shutter Island” is a very visual film, from the immersion we get into Teddy’s memories to the hugely powerful storms that at times scatter the film. Equally well defined are the details, from the plush dĂ©cor of the doctor’s quarters to the intensely retro soundtrack. Costumes are also a key feature of this film, establishing the date with ease in a way that does not detract from the comprehensive story.

It is hard not to support Teddy in his quest to figure out the mysteries of Shutter Island. He is a likeable good guy to the core. And in a film filled with baddies such as the two good cop/bad cop doctors played by Ben Kingsley and Mac von Sydow, a good protagonist is a requirement. Further filling out the film is Dolores, Teddy’s wife played by Michelle Williams.

If you like mysteries, thrillers, or a good look back in time, “Shutter Island” will leave you guessing and wondering right up until the very end, in a way that only the talented Scorsese can.
