is anyone else just TIRED of the "i'm engaged to the Worst Person Alive and won't do anything about it until i meet this down to earth single person who makes me feel like i've never felt before but i'm gonna lead them on until i'm finally fed up with how my fiance treats me and everyone else" plot? what is it with movies that feature engaged people that just stops them from being in a relationship with decent people, and the movie doesn't end with the engaged person dumping their fiance for the one they met like a week ago?

regardless, this movie is kind of cute. it features a great dynamic between the main character, Ellie, and her father as well as a friendship to strive toward (her father and uncle Zeke). it's a very sweet story, and despite my little rant up top, i did enjoy it. it's heart warming, entertaining, and the ending had me tearing up a little bit?

Well-made but somewhat odd British comedy. Status-obsessed Lord Loam (Parker) and his entourage wind up shipwrecked on a desert island; in order to survive some drastic steps have to be taken, and redoubtable butler Crichton (More) - yes, there is a Red Dwarf character named after him - rises to the occasion. Soon, the traditional hierarchy is upended But what will happen if they ever get rescued?

The Admirable Crichton seems incredibly dated nowadays, but it probably did so back in 1957 as well. Its preoccupation with the class system perhaps feels a bit quaint, but the story predicated on it is still involving - Lord Loam's daughter and Crichton fall in love, but can only be together in the class-inverted society they create on the island; there are similar subplots. It's fairly amusing in a broad sort of way, but the moments that stick with you are the ones of sadness and regret. It's hard to imagine a modern rom-com having the bravery to serve up an ending as downbeat as this one. Probably works better as a comedy-drama, to be honest; does so rather well.

Heartwarmingly brilliant
Love Actually is one of those films where i never understand how people couldn’t like it. It’s so heartwarming and sweet and romantic, with such a variety of different stories centring around love and relationships. Not only that but it’s also pretty hilarious at times and very witty too, and has a phenomenal cast. The amount of acting talent in this is second to none, and how can you really go wrong with a film that has Bill Nighy, Emma Thompson and Alan Rickman and many many others in the cast? The only real negative to the cast is sadly Keira Knightley, who I’ve never rated and she isn’t very good in this, although fortunately she isn’t in it that much.

This is a Christmas film that doesn’t go too over the top with the Christmas feels (mainly thanks to Billy Mack) and for me I see it more of a rom-com first rather than a Christmas film. But it’s still a brilliant film, although it does get me hoping that an Andrew Lincoln or Colin Firth lookalike will turn up at my door one day...

Teen Rom-Com With A Superhero Twist
Here we seem to have two separate movies mixed into one. On the one hand we have this adorable romantic comedy about two teens that go on a trip with their class overseas. On the other we have our class superhero movie with Spiderman facing off against the villian and coming into his own as a hero. Both of these not only play well but were also well combined to formulate this movie.
I enjoyed the whimsical performance of Spiderman and for once didn't feel as though the humor was overdone with his classmates. Meanwhile, on the heroics side, I adored the organized fight scenes as well as how the shots were set up. Considering this film also takes place after the heavily emotional Endgame I found the balance between the humor and seriousness to also fit well without either being overdone or feeling out of place.
As someone who isn't a huge Spiderman fan I actually found myself enjoying the film and would recommend it for any family movie night.

Awix (3310 KP) rated Yesterday (2019) in Movies

Yesterday (2019)

Highly-anticipated high-concept collaboration between two of British cinema's biggest names doesn't really live up to expectations. Going-nowhere singer-songwriter falls off his bike during a mysterious black-out and when he wakes up discovers he is now living in a world where the Beatles have never existed. Fame and fortune naturally beckon, but will they come at the expense of The Important Things in Life?

It's a fascinating premise, but one the film largely ignores in favour of a very familiar rom-com storyline that doesn't do anything particularly interesting or engaging. You can't help wondering: what has happened to the world? How come (almost) nobody remembers the Fab Four? The whole point of this kind of story is surely for the absence of the Beatles to reveal, by implication, their greatness and significance, but the film suggests they can vanish leaving barely a ripple in terms of cultural or musical legacy. The results are intermittently amusing and occasionally interesting, but the film only succeeds at aiming low. Decent performances from the leads help; Kate McKinnon is good value as usual, but James Corden and Ed Sheeran are in it too.

Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020)
Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga (2020)
2020 | Comedy, Music, Romance
Fairly standard rom-com is mashed up with that episode of Father Ted with 'My Lovely Horse' and slathered in the usual by-now-overfamiliar Will Ferrell ironic sensibility, with results that are not nearly funny enough. Two middle-aged small town freaks get to represent Iceland in the Eurosong contest after a series of unlikely events, but will the pressures of the contest keep them from recognising their true feelings for each other?

What the hell are Americans doing making a movie about Eurovision, anyway? They have clearly done at least some homework, but it's never quite clear if this is meant to be a send-up or a loving tribute (which, to be fair, is often the case with the actual ESC some years). Either way it feels strange, often quite patronising and self-indulgent, and the movie gets enough of the actual details of Eurovision wrong to annoy people who like it. The odd amusing moment and cameo, but not nearly enough in the circumstances: it feels most like Eurovision in the way that it seems to goes on forever, only not in a good way.
