Hate F*@k: Part 1 (The Horus Group, #1)

Hmm...that last bit has stumped me a little. I'll give it 3.5 stars.

I have no idea where the name came from for this because there isn't much hate going on or f*@king for that matter. There's a lot of tension and few sexual interactions but not too much--which is good as far as I'm concerned. Too much puts me off.

Another thing I liked was there was actually a plot to this book--with the name you can never be too sure--and I enjoyed it. The tension was brilliant and I couldn't wait for it to peak which it did right at the end.

As for the other part of the story, the family issue and Cole's secrets I am very intrigued by that ending. What the hell happened?!

I think I'll have to get the second part just to find out.

"I edited Scott Pilgrim on Charlotte Street in London. Two key Peeping Tom locations were outside the door of my workplace: the passageway where a doomed prostitute picks up Mark Lewis in the opening sequence, and the newsagent above which he takes adult photographs. I had seen Peeping Tom two or three times before but finally watched it on the big screen when I was working in its locale. Michael Powell’s film had always haunted and intrigued me, but seeing the streets that I traversed every day on-screen from fifty years earlier had a darkly powerful effect on me. Even though the film is a work of fiction, my walk home would never be the same again. I would think about Peeping Tom every day, and beyond that, the ghosts of Fitzrovia: dark doings behind closed doors, grim secrets at the tops of narrow staircases."

"It's another strange thing; you had to keep some records as secrets on the punk scene, but John Lydon was into [founding member of Van der Graaf Generator] Peter Hammill. There's an idea that people would hide their Genesis records and get out The Damned ones if people came round. I didn't hide mine, although I didn't play them to Ian when he came round. They're a funny band, Van der Graaf Generator. At the time, with Pawn Hearts, all of your mates would say: "Ooh, there's a track that's three days long… it's pixie stuff". But 'A Plague Of Lighthouse Keepers' is completely overblown, like a nightmare with saxophones. I suppose it's the ultimate prog-rock album: it's really overblown, but still of the terrifying. I really like Peter Hammill. He's another guy who's really unique - he has a really individual way of singing, and it's very raw."

Latter-day Almodóvar movie doesn't have the warmth or lightness of most of his best films, but retains an undeniable emotional power. Julieta (Adriana Ugarte and then Emma Suarez) meets a man and falls in love, loses him, and struggles to resolve her relationship with her daughter. The themes of the movie include the danger of secrets, the cruel randomness of fate, and the corrosive effects of despair and isolation, and this is certainly a very poignant film; tough to watch in places.

However, Almodóvar's deftness remains unimpaired and the two lead actresses give superb performances, remaining fully sympathetic even when the character is less than entirely accessible. Some may find the style of the film a bit overblown, even a touch camp, and others may miss the cheery transgressiveness and humour of earlier Almodóvar projects. But on its own terms this is a very successful and impressive piece of art.
