The final book in Jack Campbell (the pen name of John Hemry)'s The Lost Fleet series, Victorious sees 'Black Jack' Geary returning to where the series started: back to the Syndic's Home System. While the last 5 books in the series ahve all dealt with the long retreat home (even if the Alliance Fleet never believed it was, or called it as such, and which ended in the finale of The Lost Fleet: Relentless), this sees that fleet go on the offensive in a bid to end the century-old war.

Without giving anything away (or, at least, any more than the blurb on my edition does!), the previously hinted-at alien forces on the far side of the Syndic space also have a role to play in this novel, leading plenty of space for that to be developed in the planned next series of books: The Lost Fleet: Beyond the Frontier. I may just be convinced to pick those up ...

Dark and Gritty
I am a fan of Paul Finch and love Lucy as a strong, female character who takes no prisoners. Here she finds herself in the midst of a pretty grim series of what initially appear to be a series of unconnected events but they quickly turn into a nightmare investigation. This is where I need to warn you that this book does contain scenes of animal cruelty and abuse ... it also contains scenes of human cruelty! Both are hard to read.

Dark, gritty, exciting, full of tension and suspense, well written with a cast of brilliant characters, this is a great addition to the series and one I would happily recommend.

This is the third book in the series and although can be read as a standalone, to get the best out of it, I would recommend you read them in order so that you get the back story to the characters ... you won't be disappointed.

My thanks go to Avon Books UK via NetGalley for my copy in return for an honest and unbiased review.

I've seen recommendations for Six of Crows repeatedly throughout the last year or two. Favorite Series? Six of Crows. Best female assassin? Six of Crows. Best fantasy book? Six of Crows. There has been a lot of hype around this series, from what I've seen. I finally decided to give it a try - it's not necessarily part of my usual read, but I figured, if I could love the Throne of Glass series, then certainly I could get into this. I did. I enjoyed it, even with the many different point of views and third person perspective. However - and here is where I make my enemies - I didn't absolutely love it. Perhaps, like TOG, it gets better with each book, but while this first installment gets 3 stars from me (and it's a steady 3 stars, honestly), I don't believe I could rate it any higher than that. I do plan on continuing the series, full of hope that I might eventually begin to love it, but until then, I suppose I'll have to go with: "I liked it."

Few differences to the film (1 more)
Good production

Weak ending
Decent Slasher series but with a poor ending
Quite excited when I saw a TV series on one of the my fave Slasher films. Only a few ties to the film in terms of the incident that leads to the I know what you did last summer message. But otherwise it's quite different.
There is a twin element key to the main story and it's set on Hawaii. There are a lot of characters to start with, some are quite weak and annoying. The production does feel good quality overall though.
The first few episodes are pretty good and with a fare few kills and gore. The last few episodes start to focus on the Whodunit side more.. But the ending was a surprise and didn't sit right really with the rest of the series.
Overall decent to start with if running out of momentum towards the end, and an ending I don't think many will like. Worth checking out if you liked the Scream series.
