This film is the one thing a Sherlock Holmes film should never be - dumb
Sherlock Holmes is a versatile character. You can try drama, action, even comedy, but there is one thing a Sherlock Holmes film should never be: stupid. Unfortunately, that's right where this one lands. Will Ferrell is capable of doing intelligent comedy, though it doesn't happen often - just look at Stranger Than Fiction. I have every belief that this could have been good if they'd chucked the script out the window and started over. As it is, Sherlock Holmes comes off as a moron half the time, which could be an interesting take if they committed to it, but they don't. The result is a muddled vehicle for jokes about Donald Trump, selfies, and sexting via telegram. A couple scenes seem to be trying to do for (to?) Guy Ritchie's Holmes movies what Men in Tights did for other Robin Hood films, but even that falls short. I'm not going to tell you to avoid the movie like the plague - I'm sure SOMEONE out there will enjoy it. I'm just not sure I care to associate with that person.

Respectful yet still new
This Sherlock Holmes variant is wonderful. The team that has created this series has truly respected the essence and artistry of the original stories of Holmes and Watson by Arthur Conan Doyle and yet found a way to make them fresh, approachable, and almost addicting, to the modern audience.

More or less direct sequel to the first Robert Downey Jr Sherlock Holmes movie, that again continues the unfortunate trend of an over-reliance of slow motion scenes, and slapstick based around Holmes being in disguise.

Better than the first, yes, but nowhere near as good as the BBC Benedict Cumberbatch adaptations, or even of NBCs Elementary.

Ah, nothing says 'fun' like a movie based on the activities of a brutal real-life misogynistic serial killer. Classy Sherlock Holmes pastiche is as much a vehicle to disseminate one particular Jack the Ripper theory as it is entertainment; fortunately it works very well as the later.

Not really a very good Sherlock Holmes movie - Holmes and Watson are clearly twenty years apart in age, weirdly, and Holmes' fearsome intellect is not much on display; his main method here seems to be to wander about until he stumbles over the solution to a mystery. But a distinguished cast and nice production values make up for the all-over-the-shop script, and the action at the end of the movie is well-staged. Hardly an ideal Holmes, but an entertaining mystery-thriller in a post-Hammer horror sort of style, issues of taste excepted.

A teenage Sherlock Holmes takes a trip to London to visit his brother only to find his brother as the only suspect in a locked room murder. It's an interesting and fun book, but it was rather slow to get going.

The very first Sherlock Holmes novel, it's interesting reading this to see how the character is pretty much already fully formed, and to compare both Holmes and Watson to the various interpretations of each that follows.

This is where Watson first meets Holmes and takes lodgings with him in 221b Baker Street, and where Holmes science of deductive reasoning is first shared with the former following the investigation into a murder in London, that proves to have ties to the Church of the Latter Day Saints ie the Mormons.

Elementary - Season 4
2015 | Drama
Season 4 of CBS's 'modern-day' take on Sherlock (and a gerder-flipped Watson), again set in the US of A instead on in London.

Each season so far has had it's main 'focus' (for want of a better word): Sherlock himself, Moriarty, Mycroft Holmes, Kitty.

This time, it's Sherlocks father - Morland Holmes - who is the main focus of the series as a whole.

Well, perhaps focus is too strong a word: what I should, instead, be saying, is that more than a few of the episodes involve him and his various shady dealings!

Shinwell Jackson and the gang SPK.

That's the main through-line (for want of a better word) of this season of CBS's modern interpretation of Sherlock Holmes, still set in the States instead of in England, and with Johnny Lee Miller and Lucy Liu still in the joint lead roles of Sherlock and Watson.

Basically, it's become the televisual equivalent of comfort food by this point.
