A huge game that's anything you want it to be. An immense RPG, shooter, and world to explore that is only constrained by your imagination and desire to explore.

For the last two and a half decades, the first-person shooter has been a mainstay in the video game world. Never shying away from a bit of controversy, they're typically games about killing hundreds of bad guys in sequence on a Rambo-like rampage through levels.

But shooters aren't all bloody rampages without meaning, style, or substance. In case you're not too well-versed in the genre, or just need some good recommendations, here are a selection:

The Telegraph have put together a list of the best shooting games, from the bombastic gorefests to smaller indie affairs.

'This is a design of silent moments and held breath giving way to furious high fives and sore bronchial passages. It’s novel and quite addictive. It’s even extremely difficult propelling repeated play and focused intensity. Take all that and cram it inside that massive box of cardboard goodness and you have one of 2018’s most definitive releases.'

I'm not usually a fan of dexterity games, but sometimes one breaks thru... Need to try this maybe.

I remember playing this back in the back in 90s and been impressed by the game I think it was my first ever shoot em up type at the time I was still playing games like mario bros and other same type games and I tried this game and I was blown away by the graphics thought it was too gory at first but I got over that eventually still one of the best first person shooter games ever

This third-person shooter game was one of my favorite GameCube games of all time. Lucasarts put out a few great Star Wars games in the 1990s and 2000s, and this was one of them.

Original actor Temuera Morrison again supplied the voice of Jango who is probably one of the coolest prequel characters.

The adventure and shooting enemies was great fun and kept me engaged for hours and hours. Unfortunately, rotating the camera, especially in tight spaces was a big negative.

Perfectly crafted stage design, flawless controls, and an amazingly consistent flow of action (1 more)
Fun weapons, decent boss battles, and local co-op mode
Enemy design can be a little indistinct at times, and more stages would’ve been nice (0 more)
The spiritual sequel to Robotron becomes the definitive dual-stick shooter, Nex Machina is almost perfect, and one of the most successful collaborations between like-minded creators that gaming has ever seen.

Keeps you on the edge of your seat
This is another one of King's great short stories, up there with The Long Walk. A very insightful psychological thriller, that has, at some points in time, been banned from book shelves. It is one of the stories in the Bachman Books, one that is always well remembered, probably because of the effect reading it has on you.
King delves into the mind of a high school shooter, it's violent and graphic, it is not tasteless. As Bachman King did some of his best writing.

Lovecraftian horror VR waveshooter
This another wave shooter (for more on the psvr wave shooter overload/competition see my Wraith review) and uses either the Move controllers or Aim controller. Move controllers are for small guns and knives, Aim is for bigger guns. The world has gone to hell and is overrun by creepy mutants that have a Lovecraft vibe sometimes. You're out trying to find a solution. The sound design works great to track where enemies are coming from. There are a ton of different enemies, some are huge! The campaign is fun, atmospheric and gets very challenging. You buy upgrades and ammo between levels and there are hidden power ups that you can shoot to collect. There is also a survival mode that has an added map that is based on the mansion in Resident Evil. You can even see a red herb and a green herb flanking the stairs, but you can't use them. Theres a wide variety of environments from sewers, to labs, to city streets and more. It's a lot of fun, but difficult and combining that difficulty with creepiness can make it hard to want to revisit if your stuck on a level because they compliment each other.

TV news shooter Lilly Hawkins is filming the wildfire burning out of control near Bakersfield when a body is found in a lake. When it turns out to be someone she knows and she doesn't buy the story of how she died, Lilly sets out to find the killer. I missed the supporting cast from the first book, although I still enjoyed my time with Lilly. Decent mystery, too. My biggest issue was actually the fire - hit a little too close to home for me.
