Cyn Armistead (14 KP) rated The Nymphos of Rocky Flats (Felix Gomez, #1) in Books
Mar 1, 2018
I read several rave reviews about Acevedo's work, so I gave this book a try. One thing in its favor is that it is NOT a romance! Yay!
On the other hand, Felix Gomez is just a little too annoyingly prickly for me to give a damn about him. And the plot? Let's just say that as soon as I learned what "EBE" stood for, any chance of liking the book was gone. Too many clichés! Certain plot points were never adequately explained, leaving holes big enough to drive a semi through without scraping the sides.
I'm taking the other books off my to-read shelf. Life is too short to read boring novels.

He wanted to show that fate ruled people's lives, and that those who interfered with it did so to their sorrow. He put a spell on it so that three separate men could each have three wishes from it.
Can you believe that I'd never heard of this short before and knew nothing of the plot what-so-ever, before today? Well it's the truth. I think being so ignorant to it made me love it more. I got completely immersed in the story and the lives of our caring and lonely White's.
The panic felt in this book translates to the reader so much so that you find yourself short of breath, praying, hoping, that the front door stays shut.
Excellent horror short, well worth taking 10 minutes out of you day to read.

Philosophy
An interesting read
I don't think I have ever believed in a God. However, I did have certain spiritual beliefs that I started to question, I got interested in philosophy and this is one of the first books I read. If you are currently questioning your beliefs and feeling a little uncertain, this is a good book to read. I don't agree with everything Sam Harris has to say, on some points I completely disagree, that's ok though. This gets you thinking, which is a very good thing. It also helps you bridge the gap between Atheism and some spiritual beliefs you have, which on the surface don't seem to go together.
It's written well, as are most of Sam's books, an easy read and a short guide to meditating and the benefits (from a non-religious perspective). Sam has had an interesting life, what he has to say is worth taking the time to read.

Heather Cranmer (2721 KP) rated The Alamo: Flashpoint Between Texas and Mexico in Books
Jun 15, 2019
I've always been proud of my state (Texas), but here lately, I've wanted to learn all I can about Texas Independence as well as the Alamo. This book was my starting book into written literature on the Alamo (besides what I learned in my Texas History classes at school).
The introduction in the beginning of the book by the book's editor, Mary Dodson Wade, was very informative and interesting. What follows are eyewitness accounts. I wish there was a bit more of these accounts. It's a very short book, but what I did read was interesting. I also wish there was some clarification that some parts didn't happen that way such as Potter's account at seeing Dickinson die whilst holding his infant daughter which isn't true. Dickinson died, but his wife and his daughter lived. I did enjoy the illustrations in this book although there aren't many which didn't bother me.
If you're looking for a great starting point to read up on The Alamo, this book would be fantastic. It's a fast and short read. I would definitely recommend it.

Louise (64 KP) rated Fever Dream in Books

*I received a copy of this from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review*
The title of this book is very apt – this book is like a feverish dream one that is bizaare and just doesn’t make sense where anything can happen. I was instantly pulled in by the synopsis and the fact that this book has been short listed for the Man Booker Prize 2017. I wanted to see what level of writing and concepts it took to be nominated for the Man Booker.
This book was a little confusing for me, eerie and peculiar is what I felt but after finishing I sat back questioning what I had read and was not sure how to rate it. This is definitely a weird and crazy book and would be best to read in one sitting which could be done as it is only 192 pages. I think if you read this in one go uninterrupted you would feel the unease and crazyness of this short story.

Simple, Heart Warming Short Story
The story opens on Christmas Eve in London in 1940. It's the middle of the blitz, and rationing is in full effect, so it is looking like a very dismal Christmas for Maggie and Jack Harris. But then what little they do have is taken from them suddenly, and they find themselves on the streets. Jack goes looking for shelter and finds what looks like an abandoned house. Is it abandoned? What will Christmas day bring?
While I rarely read short stories, I had to grab this story from Rhys Bowen. Best known for her historical mysteries, this is more of a glimpse at tragedy and triumph during 24 hours. As such, it doesn't have the twists or shocks you might expect, but it is a very heartwarming tale. Jack and Maggie really shine, although I did find Maggie annoying at times. Believable, but annoying. A quick read (I read it in about an hour), this is a good way to hold on to the Christmas spirit just a little bit longer.

MusicCritics (472 KP) rated Younger Now by Miley Cyrus in Music
Oct 11, 2017
The songs are deliberately low-affect, if short on personality compared to her other albums. But the attention-getter is the finale "Inspired," where she writes a folksy country ballad to express some of her fears about climate change

Drive Girls is for those Vita fans out there that are dying to play an action game from Tamsoft and can’t wait for some of their other games to come West. The game fails to deliver a proper fighting system or campaign to make it worth the short gameplay
