Gisell Middleton (189 KP) rated Foe in Books
Feb 9, 2019
Very interesting plot and unexpected ending
This novel was as strange as it is haunting. It lends itself to a very vivid picture, so much that I envisioned Matthew McConaughey as the perfect Terrance. The plot is unique and even though it is a short read it packs a hefty punch. Some of the internal monologue is a bit slow but it mostly keeps you guessing.
ClareR (5726 KP) rated The Man with the Golden Gun Vintage 007 in Books
Apr 28, 2019
Not bad, but probably not the best book to start reading James Bond with, I think. Honestly, I don’t know as I would read any more anyway. This was for my library’s reading challenge (a colour), and at least it was short!
Scaramanga is the villain of this piece, and I have to admit to preferring the film to the book - not something I’ve actually experienced before!!

ClareR (5726 KP) rated Norse Mythology in Books

A short and sweet book, but I would have been happy to read more! These are very human Gods: Thor seems rather challenged in the brain department, and Loki is the annoying child at the party (or anywhere!).
This is the complete opposite to the Marvel movies (neither a good or bad thing), and I feel it's more faithful to the original myths (go figure!). Thoroughly recommended!

Mark @ Carstairs Considers (2204 KP) rated Crime de Cocoa (A Chocoholic Mystery #1-3) in Books
Mar 9, 2018
The collection of the first three Chocoholic mysteries plus the short story that was set and released before the series started. If you haven't started the series, this might be the place to start. The stories are light but fun and the characters are great.

Chris Hooker (419 KP) rated Wayworn Lovers in Books
Jun 14, 2018
This book had some holes in the plot but not enough to sink it. The characters made up for what was lacking and since this is a character driven story it worked. Brooke did a good job describing anxiety issues and that made Giselle seem more authentic. This gets four stars from me because despite the short fallings it was still a pleasure to read.
AT (1676 KP) rated Congratulations, by the way in Books
Jan 8, 2019
This was George Saunders' convocation speech that he gave at Syracuse University. He speaks about kindness, and being kind throughout your lifetime. It was a nice speech, but I wasn't as moved as I thought I'd be. I think it's because I recently read Mr. Saunders' short story, Fox 8. Fox 8 was a million times more of an emotional event for me than this speech was.
David McK (3425 KP) rated Wounds of Honour (Empire, #1) in Books
Jan 30, 2019
I don't know why, but for some reason: I just couldn't get into this book.
While it's not the worst I've ever read, I found it to actually be quite heavy going: even the action scenes seemed, to me, to be void of any danger or excitement, while the plot seemed pedestrian at best.
In short: don't think I'll be rushing out to buy the sequel!

EmersonRose (320 KP) rated The Yellow Wall-Paper in Books
Nov 20, 2019
The Yellow Wallpaper is an exquisitely written short story that captures perfectly the feelings of anxiety. It is hard to say that I enjoyed reading this story only because the feelings of reading it leave you filled with a sick anxiety. You cannot help but feel along with the main character. This is a beautiful story that I would highly recommend giving a read.
AT (1676 KP) rated Twenty-One Truths About Love in Books
Dec 12, 2019
This novel was nothing that I was expecting. I just expected another light love story, but this book turned out to be a very enjoyable, often funny read. The fact that it was written as lists was also interesting, because the story really came together, even though the details were in short lists of information. I really had a good time reading this book!
